She certainly lived by a code of honor that was so very strict, but she never swerved from what she perceived as her honor and her duty. Logan, who strived so much to be honorable himself, respected and admired her for it...even though it meant that they couldn't marry until her duty was done. She wasn't afraid to do what she had to...to ensure that honor was upheld...even though it was often difficult and caused her personal pain. I think Logan thought of her as his equal in that respect...

 In the original 4-part mini-series, Logan observes on the final page that Mariko -- in her single-minded, ruthless adherance to duty and honor (if Logan hadn't killed her father, she would have had to try to kill him, then kill herself) -- would be a formidable adversary...and as dangerous a foe as himself.
