As the eight remaining X-Men settled down at the breakfast table, the newest member of the team spoke up.

“I just want to take a moment and thank you all for taking me in. You didn’t have to, and yet you gave shelter to someone with no place to go.” Bishop said, before he sat down. “That’s a rare thing to find in my experience. You have my sincere thanks.”

Abby, who was seated to his left, patted his hand.

“Don’t worry about it, Bishop. That’s part of what the X-Men are about.” she said, smiling. “In one way or another, most of us here have no other place to go. The X-Men are the only family some of us have.”

Logan shoveled another bite of sausage into his mouth, and spoke in between chews.

“What she’s sayin’,” he mumbled. “Is yer welcome.”

Everyone at the table chuckled or smiled as they went about eating. Most of them ate rather rapidly and quietly. Either military training, having to fight for food, or just simple expediency had trained them all to “eat it now, taste it later”, as Logan put it.

It had been two weeks since E.C.H.O. had left, and things were quieting down around the school. People were sleeping through the night. Ororo had taken over as headmistress, and she and Scott (still leading the original X-Men elsewhere) were working to put together curriculum so that new classes could start in the spring with actual students. All in all, things were looking up.

The soft scrapes of silverware on dishes or Logan’s noisy coffee slurping were the only sounds in the mansion’s formal dining room until Abby broke the silence with a yelp.

“WAUGH!!!” she cried, dissolving to a fit of laughter.

“Mon trésor?” George asked, as everyone stared. “Are you alright?”

She waved a hand dismissively as she stood up.

“I swear to Christ, Logan. These stupid vibrating belt buckle communicator thingies are going to make me piss myself one of these days.” she said, pointing at her waist, where the rectangular red buckle with the black X was flashing and buzzing.

“Vell. It’s good to know zat Liam is here in spirit, if not in person.” Kurt said, smiling pleasantly as Abby tossed a sausage his direction.

“Oh, shut up.” she muttered.

Logan stood from the table and reached into his own pocket, removing his buckle. It too was flashing.

“Incoming message in the War Room.” he said to himself. “Stay here. Finish eating. I’ll go see what it’s about.”

War Room

Logan stood with his arms folded across his chest staring at the now paused message on the large video screen. Magneto, the man who’d been an unquantifiable factor with the X-Men so far, maybe an enemy, maybe not, stared out him, blue gray eyes cold and steely beneath well groomed white eyebrows. His clothes, torn and dirty, looked nothing like the gray suit that Logan had seen him in last, on Muir Island.

He now wore a blue and gold jacket, his high collar fraying on one side, the fabric streaked with soot and dirt and what Logan thought was probably blood. The people standing around him were wearing similar clothes, though theirs were different colors.

A short man with oversized goggles crouched on a large rock in two tone green.

A mountain of a man (or of fat) in black and gold standing behind Magneto.

A helmeted man in silvers and grays, more heavily armored than the rest.

A wild haired man in red and gold, flicking flames between his fingertips.

A woman in blue with gold eyes and red hair.

A woman in green and gold looking nervous.

A young man in black and maroon, a bo staff across his shoulders, arms hanging comfortably.

A woman in purple her hair blending with her suit, red facial tattoo garish in the afternoon sun.

Logan reached into the pocket of his shirt, and removed a silver cigar tube, upending into his hand, and sticking the cigar into his mouth. He lit the cigar and puffed on it for a few minutes, staring at the still image from the end of the message. He stood there, staring, thinking, letting the silvery blue smoke rise slowly towards the air scrubber’s in the ceiling.

Finally, he made a decision. Or, rather, he made the decision that it wasn’t his decision to make.

He pressed the intercom button on the control panel, and spoke into the air.

“’Ro, can ya meet me down here in the War Room, please?”

A few minutes later, she joined him in the darkened room.

“What’s wrong, Logan?”

He snorted out a lungful of smoke and motioned for her to sit in the chair next to where he leaned against the table.

“What makes ya think somethin’s wrong, darlin’?”

She gave him a sly look.

“You’re smoking inside the mansion, staring at a screen with what appears to be Magneto and an entire team of mutants.” she said. “Why wouldn’t something be wrong?”

Logan had to give the lady that one.

“Watch.” he said, pressing the restart button.

The video on the screen cut back to the beginning of the message, where Magneto stood in front of his group.

“X-Men, you have a problem.” the older man said. “Or a unique opportunity. I’m not sure which.”

He gestured wide with both hands.

“I stand here, in the middle of the Antarctic continent, in a lush jungle paradise. My secret base was invaded last night, and a present dropped off for me.” he said, pausing for effect.

“Charles Xavier ‘s brain lies comatose, yet apparently still alive, in a stasis unit in my headquarters. I expect you to come retrieve it. Coordinates will follow.” he said. “You should know, X-Men, that while I am inviting you to join me here, you will be watched, and closely.”

He glanced at the people around him, and smiled coldly.

“My Brotherhood stands ready to defend our home, if need be, but will not interfere unless provoked.” he said. “Also, you should know, your powers will not work here. There is in place a mechanism that dampens mutant powers to the point of being useless. There are dangers here, beyond those present on your screen.”

As if to punctuate his sentence, a roar from something much larger than anything Logan had ever heard called out in the distance.

“Be ready, be wary, and don’t send the children.” Magneto said, as the screen went dark.

Logan shut the screen off and turned to face Ororo.

“So do we trust Magnet Head there and do as we’re told, or let him rot in his icy jungle?” he asked. “Ain’t my call. Yer headmistress, so yer the boss. What do we do?”

Ororo was silent for a few long moments before she spoke.

"I believe that any mutant life is worth saving, even if that mutant might not be our ally. Xavier certainly qualifies as someone I'd try to save. If there is even a chance that Magneto is telling the truth, we must investigate." she said calmly.

Logan nodded.

"Alright, then. I'll go get the team prepped."

Yeah. I really liked the idea of PTT buckles and pins and insignias and such. I remember watching the animated series, and Storm reached up and pressed one of the X-symbols on her chest (which my mom always called her "boobie propellers") to communicate. I just really like the idea of everybody having these gadgets so that they're always reachable.

Okay, so Sunday morning I woke up with a little tonsillitis. Had a fire at work, and with breathing in smoke and fire extinguisher chemicals, my tonsillitis has taken over my whole body. Yesterday was my nose. Today was my right ear and chest. Who know what tomorrow brings? I should have something up this weekend though.

Get better first. You can't write fic if you're sick (no matter how much your mind may want to)
