Mutant Massacre
Volume II

Tunnel I
89 Feet beneath the corner of East 57th Street and Park Ave
Midtown Manhattan, New York
1508 hours

Liam hurt all over. His arm was burned, and his nose probably broken. His head was pounding, and his muscles still twitching from whatever short circuit thing the Korean guy had done to him. He’d been firing as well as he could, but the blonde woman someone had called Regan kept forcing him to see things that weren’t there. The shiny clear guy had fired some sort of laser beam at him, scorching his clothes and his flesh. The Korean guy had grabbed a hold of his arm, and all of a sudden, his whole world exploded into pain and light. He’d woken up a thirty seconds later, feeling like he’d just been tossed into a meat grinder and struck by lightning. He limped along the tunnel, heading back towards the switching chamber where the rest of the teams seemed to be congregated.

“Fuck me. What the fuck did I miss?” he asked, dropping heavily to the floor of the chamber.

For a moment nobody spoke. They all stood facing one of the tunnels, transfixed by something that Liam couldn’t see. He limped forward, holding his bruised ribs, and snatched up his dropped Colt 1911 from the floor. He raised the pistol, ready to fight again, but it turned out to be unneeded as he stepped up next to Kurt. The German mutant immediately crossed himself and began praying softly. Liam heard several intakes of breath; gasps of horror that came from the assembled teams. He looked into the tunnel, and at first, he didn’t see what all the fuss was about, but his brain quickly figured out what it was that he was looking at.

The tunnel was unique in that its brick walls were red, instead of the normal gray of the other tunnels they’d been in. It took Liam a moment to realize that they were coated in blood. Along the walls were bodies, impaled or crucified with long spears made of what seemed to be thorny wood or bone. The spears formed a deadly maze through the tunnel, making it impossible to traverse the length of the tunnel without knocking the bodies loose or snaring oneself. Most of them were gutted, their entrails spilling down their bodies to the floor in bright red and yellow lumps, making the floor even slicker than it would usually be.

Liam stood there for a long moment, staring, trying to process the scene. His mind could only come up with a single analogy, something he’d seen in North Korea. It was a charnel house of monumental proportions. The Korean People’s Army, or KPA had a nice little death camp at Kaechon. Torture, brutal treatment, and horrible living conditions weren’t the worst of things. The executions and torture were done in full view of anyone who cared to look, especially other prisoners, but the experiments done by the doctors there were so much worse.

One such doctor, a Pak Dae-Jung, had a pit constructed. He took prisoners who caught his eye, and hung them over the pit by their feet, which was approximately forty feet deep, and beheaded them, to see how much blood would drain before simply dropping the bodies into the pit once he collected his data. When Liam and his team of Rangers had extracted a few highly sought after prisoners for the US Government, they’d stumbled across the doctor and the pit, which was now filled with thirty feet worth of bodies and blood. The doctor hadn’t apologized for his crimes, or begged for his life. He’d simply insisted on explaining the finer details to the American Rangers. The sight of his grinning face as they injected him with his own anticoagulant and strung him up by his heels, chopping his hands off to let him bleed out like one of his experiments, would haunt Liam forever. That same grin came to mind as he stared down the tunnel.

He’d grown accustomed to the smell in the sewers, but the coppery scent of blood and the foul, sour smell of pierced stomachs, bladders, and bowels washed over him as he stood there. He had to fight to keep from gagging. Abby, Bradley, Antony, and Ororo weren’t so lucky. Storm gagged, Bradley and Antony nearly fainted, and Abby vomited, turning away. George moved over to help her out, and for the first time since the battle back at the mansion, she didn’t push him away.

“What the fuck?” Liam asked, for lack of anything better to say.

“Dunno, kid.” Logan growled, taking very short breaths. “Don’t fuckin’ know.”

Cat turned away from the horrible tunnel, and faced Logan.

“We need to process this, Logan.” she said.

“I don’t think we’ll ever be done processing this, Cat.” Maverick said softly.

“That’s not what she meant. We need to go in there and process the scene. Look for clues.” Logan muttered. “We need to find out which one o’ those fucking bastards did this, and we need to punish them.”

“Logan. We’ve got bigger problems than retribution at the moment. Creed’s still loose.” Cat said, placing a hand on his shoulder.

He whirled on her, snarling.

“Who’s fucking idea do you think this was?!” he shouted, shoving her back a few steps. “This has Creed’s goddamned signature all over it, Cat! Jeezus Fucking Christ!”

A squeal of horror came from the tunnel opposite from the body filled tunnel. The group turned as one away from the carnage and found Leech, his golden eyes painfully wide as he stared into the tunnel. He darted forward.

“Shit.” Logan muttered, reaching out to intercept the kid in midstride.

Leech clawed and cried and kicked and screamed, trying to get away from Logan, trying to reach the bodies.

“Morlocks! Morlocks dead! Why?!” he cried. “Why upworlders kill Morlocks?! Leech kill all upworlders!”

“Easy, Leech. Easy, kid.” Logan said softly, comfortingly, carrying the green skinned child out of the switching chamber. “I’ll explain everything.”

Cat turned back to the group, clearing her throat.

“We have a grim task ahead of us, people. We have to clear this tunnel, and we have to do it now. Carefully.” she said, scowling. “Who’s got a strong stomach?”

John stepped forward, as did Liam. Kurt moved forward reluctantly. Monique slunk forward as well.

“Alright. We need to get those spears out and get the bodies out here into the chamber.” Cat said. “Suggestions.”

“John and I will do the in tunnel work.” Kurt said, cutting everyone off. “I’ll teleport us in carefully, then teleport the spikes away while John holds each person. I’ll come back and bring John and these poor souls out, one at a time. That way we won’t disturb too much. If there is any peace to be had, these people deserve it.”

“Are you sure you can handle this, Preacher?” Liam asked softly.

Kurt placed a hand on his shoulder, and wiped a few tears from his own eyes.

“The Lord will not place anything on my shoulders that I cannot endure. I shall endure, because I must.” Kurt said.

Cat nodded silently.

“Okay, buddy. Let’s get to it then.” Liam said softly.

A good issue, especially since this would be the first time the X-men would face bodies like these.

Yeah. I figured that Logan, Cat, Maverick, Liam, John, and maybe Sean would be the only ones even remotely accustomed to this kind of body count. Everybody else is either shocked, repulsed, or completely numbed.

Excellent. Love that Cat's interested in finding Creed, cause she knows if they don't find him soon, then they won't find him.
Looking forward to Govar's next chapter.
