I know that we have touched on this subject before but I need to rant a bit here.

The other night I was watching a movie entitled "Bigfoot" about a guy who finds a bigfoot in the woods and befriends the creature. (It was a stupid movie but that is besides the point.) Anyway in the movie the guy goes and tells his girlfriend about the creature. She does not believe him, calls him childish and breaks up with him. Later in the movie the girlfriend is complaining to her friend that the boyfriend lives in a fantasy world filled with comic books and super-heroes.

Now this annoyed me because I just cannot understand why most women find the appreciation of comic books in some ways so offensive.

Now personally I like to read and write, listen to music, and watch movies. Other than that I am a typical guy I drink beer, hang out with friends, and enjoy watching some sports. Apparently this is not enough because when it is discovered that I like comic books and etc. it eliminates me as a dating option. Now this is not a problem at present because my current girlfriend tolerates my comic book tpb collecting, but she does not entirely understand it.

I guess my question is what is the template that women have of men and what their interests should be, because I must of have missed that memo?

Women want a few different types. 1) The bad boy, jerk, whatever you want to call him. He is the one that treats her badly but she can change. He does not read comics. 2) Manly men who fix things and can protect her. He does not read comics. 3) The sensitive artistic type who is in touch with his feelings and can relate to her. He might read comics but call them graphic novels and only the really out of main stream things.

I could go on and on but the long and the short of it is that comics are still seen as something young people or immature types like. They to not project strength and stability and manliness that women seem to look for.

I think that you pretty much pegged it. The whole thing is pretty hypocritical, because alot of women I know seem to have this idea that her man will be the knight in shining armor on the charging steed that will arrive to sweep her off her feet. That is a complete fantasy but is somehow deemed ok, but my love of comics is slated as immature. It is a double standard.

For the record I live in what I consider redneck central so here is how I fail on the manliness list.

1) Beer drinking-- I can drink more than my fair share.
2) Big Pick-up trucks--I do not own a truck because I do not have a need for one.
3) Sports--I like watching football and hockey on tv, but it is of limited interest to me.
4) Hunting--Not a fan of hunting because I do not like the gore involved, but do not condemn others who hunt.
5) Camping and fishing--I am not a fan of either. In my opinion if people were meant to live outside they would not have invented houses.
6) Fixing things--I have basic skills to fix cars and a few other things.
7) Protection--I have a punching bag that I pound on for exercise, but I generally get my ass beat in bar fights.

My girlfriend reads my tpbs more often than she will admit. I sometimes catch her reading them on the sly but she is pretty stealthy about it.

As the only girl on the Comm, I feel I must issue a point for my sisters. Girls do like and Read Comics and can be very good at it (jrpbsp and Govar have seen proof of this), but it's made an issue for us.

Women tend to feel excluded from comics, because it's protrayed as geeky and that no guy would be interested in a girl who reads comics. Thus during our teens (when most guys are encouraged to read comics) we're disencouraged quite actively by our peers. I was just lucky that I had a group of friends who were all equally obessive about various things, and accepted and supported my love of comics, star trek, ect.

One problem is that most comic book writers and artists are men, so they tend to be aimed at men (semi naked females with big boobs, sorry guys I am straight). The media suggests that these women are anti femmist and insulting to women.
If you've read them, you know this isn't true, that there are many strong superheroines out there, Storm or the new Hawkeye being excellent examples. They also are seen to involve a lot of fight scenes. I can manage a good fight scene, but four whole issues of blood and gore can push even me to my limits. (The deathlock arc of Wolverine Weapon X for example) Fortunately most writers incluve some form of plot which can hold my attention.

there is also problems with the way women are protrayed in comics, the classicWomen in the refridgerator syndrome, normally shown in Marvel by the death of Gwen Stacy.

It can also be very intimidating as a woman on your own to go to a comic store or convention. You are mostly surrounded by men, and you feel like you will be look at as a freak. While I am certain no one on this comm would do that, it can feel very unnerving.

Also, there are a lot of girls who are into comics, you guys just aren't dating them. I have serveral friends who are really into comics, and know of millions more online.

Also Kudos to Govar for supporting my point.

With regards to that, Women are attracted by many different types, including the comic book reader. He just has to show us he cares more for us than his comic collection.

I think even for sterotypes, a fourth and fifth man should be added. The cute geek. He will almost certainly wear glasses and have studied something like computer science or maths. He will read comics, just not in a creepy obessive way (or at least not that he will admit to). and the sweetheart.

The sweetheart is a kind, sensative guy, but who can still fix things and protect her.

Any more sterotypes on this score, and I'll give you a list of the men women seem to attract take it from me. Not good for your gender.

I admit characters like Ms.Marvel who fight scantly clad...it's a bit weird.
Dont get me wrong she is a awesome character who goes great lengths to save the day and she's quite complex , her costume is just a means really to get more readers from a certain demographic (being young men).
Same goes with Spider-woman although her costume is a bit more covering and I think more bad ass then Ms.Marvel's.

My girlfriend and I both follow english literature and even before that we both had interests in story telling and comic books are a excellent medium to tell stories from. Heck in our classes we met plenty of women who admit they have read comics or watched animated shows of comic book characters and they loved them.

So this old stereotypical girl loves though comic book hating guy is sort of getting replaced by a culture which openly has become more hospitable and open minded to the 'nerdy' side of entertainment.

Yeah, the films have made it a lot easier and a lot more acceptable to be into comics and a girl. That doesn't mean I don't still get some odd looks when I'm digging though comic boxes, lol

And while I love Ms Marvel when she's Carol Danvers, I can't stand her costume.
