Battleship Doubtless
by Gorvar

In the year 2456 mankind has reached out for the stars, having founded colonies throughout the solar system. During the terraforming of Pluto the colonists found a mysterious gateway in a nearby orbit, which somehow evaded detection despite mankind’s constant probing around their own solar system.

A small fleet of ships of the S.U.N (Solar United Nations) , among them the battleship Doubtless, traversed the gateway, ending up on the other side of the galaxy.
Due to the solar system’s population booming mankind was forced to expand to this new part of the galaxy, coming into contact with two alien races.

The Grann are a proud noble but savage, warlike race, having just perfected space travel and the Sankath, a mysterious aquatic race which only trade with the SUN or the Grann sparingly.

The two major races in this part of the galaxy were the humans and the Grann, who although not hostile to each other, barely traded. With each other, causing friction when the two did interact.

However, after 23 years of uneasy peace, it was only a matter of time before war came....

Prologue

Zach was shaken awake from his peaceful, careless slumber by his mother, her normally concerned but caring smile replaced by utter fear.
‘Zach, wake up sweety, we have to go!’ she picked her youngest son up and ran downstairs.
‘Mommy...?’ Zach, barely age 6, yawned.

He saw she had been crying, she always did when daddy came home. He hurt her, and sometimes Allan, his elder brother, to. He was a soldier, somebody who protects people.

As Zach rubbed his eyes, he was met by nightmare, hell on Earth (despite it being over a million light years from the blue planet).
The planet, Yadopin, was a agricultural planet and one of mankind’s first colonies in the Omega Galaxy.

The once beautiful white buildings were covered in ash as they crumbled down, beset by fast flying dart like ships. Zach’s mother carried him through the ruins, telling her son to close her eyes as they stepped over the bodies of neighbours and friends. She wept as she saw several of her students being among the dead.

A dart ship, Grann she knew, flew overheard as it fired upon another building. The building exploded immediately, leaving a burning, smoking ruin it it’s place. She hoped to god that the burning black spots that fell out of the windows were just bricks, but she knew better.

She joined a flood of other refugee’s to the ships. She had to get there and hope allan would be there with Zach’s father, Jason.

Gunshots were heard nearbye, as she turned around she saw a footman of the attackers.
A Grann, a bipedal green skinned gorilla like being, save for it’s squat nose and two inch tusks. It’s armour was fashioned out of pelts save for the helmet which was made out of metal. In his hand he had a large machine gun equipped with a bayonet.

The Grann, a male, grinned at her and aimed his gun at her. She held her son and turned around as the Grann’s soldier pulled the trigger. She didn’t feel the pain.

Zach fell down, his mother’s body having protected him from the bullets.
The Grann however were thorough and flipped her body over, growling as he saw the child.
Zach cried as he tugged his mother’s sleeve to wake her up.

The Grann took aim at the child....but was soon himself fired upon. The footman fell down as he got shot down by blue light like bullets, penetrating the pelts like they were made out of paper.

Zach closed his eyes when the shots fell. He felt the Grann solider fall as two figures ran towards him. When the boy opened his eyes he saw another Grann looming above him. ‘Mommy!’ Zach shouted, nudging his mother.

‘We’re to late Sir...she’s dead.’ The Grann said in a heavy guttural voice as he reloaded his rifle.
He was different, he had blue skin and wore the gray-white uniform of a solider, like Zach’s father.

A man ran up to Zach, picking him up. He was a clean shaven male specimen at his prime, wearing the same uniform like the Blue Grann, save for the medal of a eagle on his chest where his heart should’ve been. His blue eyes seemed to radiate experience despite his youthful look and black hair.
‘Check if she is Thork!’ the man shouted, checking Zach. ‘Are you alright Zachery, are you hurt?’

The man’s concerned look was all Zach needed to trust him. He held on to him, whimpering. ‘Mommy hurt....’

Zach glanced at his mother’s corpse, blood spots starting to appear on her back. The man held his hand over the boy’s eyes. ‘Don’t look...’ the man’s voice broke. ‘don’t look....’

Thork, for that was the blue Grann’s name, checked the woman’s vitals, but shook his head.
‘I’m sorry, Captain Devreaux...’
‘Kyra....’ Devreaux whispered as he strayed Zach’s hair, trying to comfort the boy.
‘Sir, we have to go, they caught our scent.’

The captain nodded, glancing one last time at Kyra’s body before running off.

The two soldiers ran through the ruins where skirmishes were fought out between the Grann soldiers and the humans, the former advancing while the latter slowly gave ground back, giving the refugees a chance to escape to their ships.

Devreaux grabbed his pistol mounted on his belt, firing a signle shot at a Graan wielding a war mace that charged at him. The Grann fell down when the bullet pierced through his skull.

Thork fired behind them, killing three pursuers.
‘Captain, we need extraction, now!’ he shouted.
Devreaux nodded and called a nearby solider over. ‘Private, what is the status on the evacuation?!’

‘The Doubtless chased away the fighters sir, the evac ships all left.’ The private replied.
‘All of them?!’
‘Yes sir, what are your orders?!’

Devreaux still held the crying Zach. ‘Seems your sticking with us a bit longer....’ he mused.
‘We’re pulling out, get to your ship, spread the word.’ He ordered the soldier.
The private saluted his commanding officer and ran off as he spread the word.

Thork looked up as several triangular shaped fighters flew overhead, firing their payload on the advancing Grann.
‘R.A.F’s’ the friendly Grann pointed out. ‘Those are ours.’
‘They are.’ Devreaux nodded as he pushed on the side of his head, activating his internal communicator . ‘Jenkins, Vera, how is the LZ?’

‘Lz is hot, we cant hold on much longer sir.’ A male voice said.
‘Understood, we’re nearly there.’

The captain led the Grann through the streets as he held Zach, remembering where to go.
As they crossed around the corner they saw two soldiers hiding behind debris as a large dropship, in the form of a large manta ray, stood behind them. The Captain again contacted the two soldiers.

‘Jenkins, we on your right, can you see me?’
One of the soldier glanced at his direction. ‘I do sir...is that a ki-‘
‘Provide covering fire Jenkins, we’re coming over.’
‘Yes sir.’

Jenkins and Vera, for that was the name of the female soldier, fired blindly at the ruins in front of the where the Grann were hiding as Devreaux and Thork ran over.
The captain gave Zach to the Grann, much to Zach’s distress.

‘We’re leaving!’ Devreaux shouted as he fired at the ruins, both Jenkins and Vera ran in the dropship.
Devreaux slammed his fist on the side of the ship, the door closing.
Jenkins took his helmet off as he ran his hand through his short red hair. He blinked as he saw Zach crying.
‘Holy crap...is that a kid?’

‘The other ships left, he’s coming with us.’ Devreaux tapped Jenkins on the shoulder.
He took Zach back from the grateful Thork. Vera took her helmet off, letting her long black hair fall behind her as she sat down.’ Not great with children are you Thork?’ she grinned.
‘Children are for females...’ he growled.

The passengers took their seat, strapped themselves tight as the dropship launched to space.
Devreaux ran to the pilot’s seat, glancing down on the once green planet one more time.

The dropship flew with the others back towards their ship, the SUN Doubtless.
Zach gaped his mouth as he saw the gigantic battleship.
‘Captain, they’re hailing us.’ The pilot said.
‘Patch him through...’ Devreaux nodded.

On the small monitor the face of a bearded man with a few hints of gray appeared.
‘Yer allright Brecht?’ the man asked in a Scottish accent. ‘Did you find her?’
Devreaux shook his head. ‘No...just her youngest Ian.’
Ian Mckiallen nodded. ‘Sorry laddie...nothin’ we cean do now.....’

‘The colonists?’ Devreaux asked.
‘They’re all settin’ their lightspeed course to Station Voyage, this is happenin’ all over the outer rims. Get here as soon as yer cean’
‘I will Ian, see you on the bridge.’

The dropship landed in the hangar bay on the side of the large Arrow-point headed ship.
When the last dropship landed the hangar doors closed behind them. A large BOOM sound was heard as all the air came back into the hangar, the repair crews going to the ships once the pressure was restored.

‘Take the kid to sick bay.’ The captain gave Zach to Jenkins.
Zach cried out as he held Zach by his coat.
‘Zach, I’ll be back as soon as I can, okay?’ Devreaux held Zach’s little hands. ‘Promise.’
Zach sniffed, but stopped crying. ‘Promise...’ he whimpers as Jenkins took him to sick bay.

Devreaux walked back to the bridge, followed by Thork.
‘Captain on the bridge!’ a guard shouted as everyone saluted when the two stepped out of the lift. . Devreaux gave a short salute back as he stood next to the Scotsman, behind a large holographic map of the planet.

‘How many casualties?’ the captain asked.
‘Minimal on our end, but from the last message we got from the planet’s ‘Gaia’ system over 10 000 people died before we even got here.’
‘Jesus...that’s almost 1/3 of the planet....’

‘Sir, we got multiple signals incoming!’ the radar operator shouted over. ‘Five of them!’
‘Friendly?’ Ian asked.
‘Naye sir...Grann.’ she replied.

‘How long until those ships are in lightspeed?’ Devreaux asked.
Ian glanced at his watch. ‘Ten minutes, give or take.’
‘Those Grann getting here?’
‘Five captain.’

Devreaux rubbed his chin, deep in thought.
‘Thork, what battle plan would they use?’
‘They would fire missiles first to weaken the defence before sending the Tri’hugar.’ The Grann referred to the dart fighters. ‘ After that the capitol ships will come in to finish the job.’

‘All right, Mister Mckiallen I want red alert on all ships, turn the ship around with 90 degrees, tell our birds to stay behind the ship until I give the word, activate all defensive turrets.’ He ordered his XO.
‘Aye Captain!’ the Scotsmen said as he walked off relaying the orders.

The Doubtless turned around as it’s turrets came online, creating a protective shield for the fleeing refugee ships.
The RAF fighters, Rapid Assault Fighters, withdrew from the planet’s atmosphere and floated standby for the word of Captain Devreaux.

‘Captain, contact!’ the radar monitor shouted.
‘All turrets open fire, wide spread!’

The turrets opened fire at the incoming objects, small explosions occurring between the space of the Doubtless and the incoming Grann capitol ships.

‘Captain, several missiles are going directly for the refugee ships!’ she pointed out.
‘Cowards!’ Tork growled. ‘There is no honour in fighting a armless fleeing foe!’
Devreaux inclined his head. ‘Tell the fighters to break in three groups and destroy those missiles, turrets open fire on the incoming Grann fighters.’

Mckillan moved over to a computer, pushing in a button.
‘Nomad, this is Doubtless, split in three groups and go after the targets we give you.’

Nomad, the squad leader of the Hell Ravens, received the targets on his helmet.
‘Understood Doubtless.’ He said. ‘Alpha 6 scramble boys and girls, go to your marks.’

The RAF’s broke formation and went after their targets, destroying the missiles before they could do any harm. Nomand cheered as one by one the refugee ship disappeared into light speed.
‘Doubtless this is Nomad, the evacuation ships are leaving the sector!’

The Grann fighters neared, opening fire on the human capitol ship. The turrets returned fire, effectively destroying many Tri’hugar fighters. The Grann fighters broke the attack which made Devreaux grin.
‘Call the fighters in and set the light speed course to Voyage, load all torpedo’s.’

The Blood Ravens rallied and landed on the hangar bay just as the Grann capitol ships came into reach.
‘Course calculated in five minutes Captain.’ The Xo said. ‘Assumin’ they aint have blown us up by then.’
‘A very pessimistic thought Mister Mckillan.’ Thork grinned.
‘I’m realistic laddie.’

‘Fire the torpedo’s and make course towards the capitol ships.’
The crew on the bridge blinked at their captain.
‘Although this might be a heroic death captain, I see no reason in this tactic.’ The Grann said.
‘Trust me Thork, Mister Mckillan?’

The Xo nodded and once more relayed the orders throughout the ship.
The torpedo’s were shot into space, setting course to the capitol ships.
They hit them for a reasonable amount of damage.

The Doubtless sat course to the battle group of enemy vessels, firing it’s turrets at the enarest ships.
‘Aim for the flagship and set full shields on the front of the vessel, we’re going in ladies and gentlemen.’

The Grann ships fired their payload at the human ship, it’s shields barely holding on as it neared.
‘The calculations ere made Captain!’ Mckillan held on to the map, which was being scrambled by the hits the Doubtless took.
‘Make a 180 turn and make the jump!’

The Doubtless turned around, it’s turrets fell silent, and disappeared as well. The Grann ships’s systems became disorientated and crashed into each other.
In one of remaining ships a Grann commander growled as she got up. She held a hand on her left eye, realizing she just lost it. Female Grann were slimmer and more feminine then their male counterparts, this one’s natural long black hair tied in a knot.

‘Damage report...?’ she growled.
‘We lost shields, engines and weapons captain.’ The sole surviving crew staff said. ‘Those monkeys got us drifting.’
She cried out in anger which could be heard throughout the ship for those who could hear.
‘One day...’ she clenched her fist. ‘That ship will be mine...’

Brecht Devreaux stood behind a glass screen as he saw Zach sleeping in a room with other orphans. He looked up as he saw the matron came over.
‘You asked for me Captain Devreaux?’ she asked.
He nodded. It’s been three hours since they arrived at the space station Voyage.

Here all the information came together. Over seven worlds were attacked, 4 billion casulties, thousands wounded, many more missing. One battle group of SUN vessels didn’t report in after their patrol, they were assumed lost. The survivors called this G-day, Grann day.

‘Does he have any family?’ he pointed to Zach.
She nodded. ‘Yes, his aunt in Topica made it out just in time, she’s here in the station.’
He sighed of relief. ‘Thank god...’
‘You know him, Captain?’
‘Knew his mother..’

She inclined her head understanding and left.

The entire Omega system was thrown into war, all the refugees were send back by the gateway to the solar system. Earth and Mars were sending half their fleets through to bolster the defenses of the SUN force in the Omega sector.

Over 10 engagements in the past five hours there was no official reason given by the sudden Grann hostilities.
Devreaux sighed once more, seems mankind was at war once again.

The end.

Well I think if we ever meet Aliens and it's on bad terms they would call us monkeys or Apes...Except if they are Apes themselves...
