Most of the characters introduced during the anti-hero age of the late seventies hit the bottle pretty heavily.

I think Wolverine was first depicted drinking way back in the 1970s comics. Perhaps Ben Grimm was depicted on panel drinking earlier, but I am not sure.

These days it seems like any depiction of drinking, smoking or sex in any enertainment medium automatically draws the wraith of the political correctness police.
I still hate the f-ing media for saying 'Mass Effect' was a horrible game because there is sex in it.

Smart-ass Wolverine was what got me hooked on the character! :D I am along time smart/bad-ass supporter and for me Wolverine is the grand daddy of the category! I think it`s half his charm, too, also a nice way to balance the berserker. Or a good way to lift the spirits when the team is down on their luck. That`s the great thing about Logan, you can rely on him to back you up both literally or morally!

What about Tony Stark?
Dude drinks more then he can handle.

With Tony it was more of a plot device, whereas drinking was depicted as one of Logan`s character traits. Never an issue with him...as long as he can heal, that is.

I always like the idea that the new team of X-Men were much older and more adult than the first team of X-Men. Wolverine's drinking, smoking and occassional swearing reflected that, just as Storm's preference for being nude at the drop of a hat.

Older, more experienced and with their own thoughts and opinions on things. The first team always seemed a bit brain washed into 'Xavier is all and can do no wrong'. The second team had their own reasons for joining and could see multiple sides of an issue. Why I always liked it better.
