Most of Wolverine's loved ones wind up with a severe case of death sooner or later, so you can understand why he might think twice before getting involved with San Franciscan reporter Melita Garner. On February 3, writer Jason Aaron and artist C.P. Smith will help him come to a decision in WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #10.
"Logan has always had a weakness for pretty women, as we all know," relates Aaron. "And he hasn't had a steady love interest for quite a while now, so it seemed like a good time to hook him up with someone. As for what's going through Logan's mind right now, issue #10 will provide some of those answers, as will issue #11, when Logan sits down for a beer-or several beers, actually-with one recently reborn Steve Rogers."
Though we've seen Wolverine fall in love with tragic results a number of times in the past, Aaron has an interest in approaching the character's newest relationship from a different angle.
"He's usually had enemies around willing to strike at him through his love interests, unfortunately for those various women," the writer reminds us. "Let me just go ahead and say, though, that's not what I'm looking to do here. I'm very conscious of the fact that Logan's girlfriends have usually met a tragic fate. I didn't want to introduce a new woman to his life only to turn her into a damsel in distress or an easy target for his enemies. I WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #10 cover by Adam Kubert wanted him to have a real relationship with a real, fleshed out character. That's not saying they're going to settle down to a life of baseball games and barbecues anytime soon. But I just want everyone to know, this lady ain't simple cannon fodder."
Nonetheless, both Wolverine and Melita will have to become a little extra cautious to insure that this romance doesn't meet the end that so many of Logan's others have.
"That's something I'll obviously be addressing as we move forward," remarks Aaron. "Yeah, those risks will always be there, but for some reason, maybe Logan feels a little more hopeful about his future. Again, check out issue #11, the beginning of our big new arc 'Tomorrow Dies Today,' which introduces an all-new Deathlok to the Marvel Universe."
And Melita will know exactly what she's getting into, according to Aaron.
"She's a reporter, so she's gonna get her facts straight before she gets too involved," notes the writer. "Again, this is something we'll be directly addressing in issue #10."
Of all the women Logan's had in his life, Aaron sees two in particular as having made the greatest impact on the character.
"I think Jean [Grey] is still the love of his life, and I think the fact that he lost his mother the way he did when he was so young has had a tremendous effect on him as well," he posits.
WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #11 cover by Adam Kubert The upcoming one-shot story will also feature a number of guest appearances before Aaron launches into his third major story arc on the series."
"In issue #10, look for cameos by a lot of the most important women from throughout Logan's life, including Storm, Rogue, Jubilee and Black Widow, as well as a woman who's feelings toward Logan are anything but affectionate.
"And beyond that, did I mention cyborg super killers from the future and star-spangled shield slingers and beer? And further down the road, well, let's just say that for Logan, the worst is yet to come. Before the year is out, Logan will be going somewhere he's never gone before, and boy, let's just say it'll be a most unpleasant trip for the ol' Canucklehead.

I predict she lasts about a week past the end of the Weapon X series. Or at least Aaron's involvement in it.
I am actually curious about the Black Widow being in this though. I wonder if it will finally clear up their involvement or lack thereof?

Just hope they ignore Way's writing for Weapon X 11. I want Friends Steve and Logan not "I tried to kill you" Logan and Steve. That said, at the moment she should be O.K. Both Carol Danvers and Storm had close relationships with Logan and they're still O.K.

Carol has died a couple times and her relationship was mostly pre-comics anyway. Storm and Wolverine never got past the couple friends stage.

You should read the latest issue 10 of Wolverine Weapon X, it tells about Wolverine of how usually the women he loved in his life dies or tries to kill him. And Wolverine is trying to be cautious for Melita.
SPOILER ALERT:
Wolverine talks to the other girls close to him but love, about his relationship with Melita. He is more worried that she will suffer the same fate as Mariko, Silver fox, etc. Wolverine wasn't to sure if Melita is prepared for that life. He then tells her about all his previous love, Mariko was the first to be shown. Melitna told Wolverine that she know much more about his previous love past. She is a reporter of course and she prepared for anything. And Logan asked what would she do if Lady Deathstrike and Sabertooth come after her. She replied by kicking Logan in the face. Melita learned martial arts from the Sons of the Tiger.

I don't think that would help. Mariko was a trained samurai and she got killed easily. The type that come after Logan aren't coming to be stopped by anyone below Elektra levels of uberness.
SPOILER
Besides if she was so tough, why would Maverick have had to save her?

Besides if she was so tough, why would Maverick have had to save her? Excuse me but the writers said something about Wolverine's relationship with Melita.

The writer said that she will not be simply canon fodder and she is more prepared now on this latest chapter. Have faith in this girl like it or not.
And heres a an interview of Aaron about Melita.

Nrama: You mentioned there's going to be a lasting effect from what happens to Wolverine mentally in this storyline, and some things from the first storyline have carried over. One in particular is Melita, who is becoming important to him. Is the thought to have threads that carry over from storyline to storyline, including this love interest?
Aaron: Yeah, I'm still trying to tell one big, over-arcing story that will run through all the arcs. But hopefully each arc will be fresh enough for someone to be able to jump right into it.
But yeah, there will still be a main storyline running through there about Wolverine and this new love interest. And we'll see where that leads. Obviously, Wolverine's love interests don't have a very good track record in terms of survival. And that's something she'll be made aware of.
I wasn't looking to create another damsel in distress, just to create somebody who falls in love with Wolverine and is assailed by Sabretooth or whatever, where he's always having to rescue her. That's not the direction we're going. Wolverine's love interests in the past have always seemed to be just cannon fodder, so I wanted to create somebody with hopefully a little more life to them. And just see where that leads.
Nrama: We've seen solicitations for the end of this arc, as Nightcrawler and Psylocke show up to help out Wolverine. And there are quite a few guest stars expected in Wolverine #10. These are ladies from Logan's past?
Aaron: Yeah, #10 is like our sex and romance issue, I guess. You'll learn more about Wolverine's sex life than you've probably ever wanted to know. And it features guest spots by several different women from his life, like Storm and Rogue and Jubilee and Black Widow. So lots of different women pop up, who he's ever had relationships or close friendships with.
Beyond that we see some of the good and the bad over the course of that issue.

on Melita im still unsure how much i like or dislike her. Time will tell i guess but if she is developed slow enough and doesn't die for a couple of years that is fine with me.

Well Aaron definitely won't kill her and he will keep her around in his title which is going to continue in Wolverine so that is fine. Once he leaves though? I expect she either is forgotten or dies. Pretty much everyone that writes Wolverine has a different idea of what his love life should be. It was only a couple years ago when he was with Domino in X-Force (which is continuing even now).
