Passage of time; ages of characters

I just recently read "Wolverine: Origin," and overall, I liked it. The story reminded me of any number of convoluted, family skeletons' melodramas that were such mainstays of 19th-century novels...the remote sprawling estate; the wealthy family with numerous servants vs. the poorer people barely surviving in the village below; the dark family secret; human passions supressed, denied, finally exploding in tragedy; lives changed forever; trauma-induced amnesia; identity lost, forgotten; once-privileged and coddled son becomes a lowly menial, becoming a "man" in the process. However, there were too many loose ends and unexplained situations and relationships which would have been completely revealed by the umpty-umpth chapter of such a 19th-century novel. **sigh** Such a Victorian-era novel would have slowly spun out the story with excrutiating, but riveting detail.

I understand many who have been with Wolverine/Logan throughout his long history were not happy at all when this "Origin" was published, and perhaps it was the harbinger of the way the character would be handled by the editors at Marvel throughout the past decade.

I came back to this portion of the WFF to see if anyone had figured out the passage of time throughout the six chapters, and what the relative ages of Rose, Dog, and James were at the beginning of the story and at the end. After reading, I speculated that the whole series may have taken place within 6 to 8 years, but am not sure. As I did not find that discussion here, I am asking interested Forum posters if they have any ideas.

At the beginning, Rose states that she is 12. To me, she seems older than both Dog and James. I guessed that Dog was around 10 or 11, and that James was even younger - around 8 or 9. Does this seem plausible?

How many years between Rose's arrival at the Howlett estate and Elizabeth Howlett's death?

How many years are Rose and James/Logan in the quarry camp before Rose's death? How old is she when she dies? 16? 17? 20? How old is Logan when he runs away into the wild at the end? 15? 16?

The thing with Comics is it's very hard to show how old characters are.
Peter Parker for example still looks like a twenty something when he's allready passed thirty.

I put Dog around Rose's age, 12 and James a couple of years younger. By the time she dies I estimated around five years had past putting James at 15 and Rose at 17 which is a perfectly acceptable marring age back then. (Though Marvel would probably state she was 18 and James 16 to be P.C.).

That's the problem aswell with writing a story with our own culture in the abck of our head.
In those days 16-17 year olds were allwoed to marry while over here to minimum is 18.

They could have been as young as 14 and 16 but James seemed to be nearly adulthood in ways 14 year olds don't at least in these days. I figured he should be 15 still boyish looking but nearly adulthood.

Sounds about right, and thanks again everyone, for your responses. I know the narrative made it impossible to really nail down the actual passage of years but, at least I'm in the approximate ballpark, and I appreciate your thoughts.

hello im new to the board and wanted to chime in too. about ages i always thought the rough timeframe was about 1892 as Logan's birth which wolud make him about 18 by the time he was living with Silverfox in Mount Logan, i always figures that Rose and Dog were the same age as James since James is the runt and very small compared to others his own age. what do you guys think. I also think he was 14 or 15 when he went to live in the mining colony

I expect he was older then that when he was with Silver fox, probably early twenties or although hard to be sure. I figured he lived in the woods roaming around for a while before settling down with her.

It may interest you to know Dan Slott states that Peter is in his mid-to-late 20s.
