One hypothosis that I have always entertained is that Mariko Yashido was a latent mutant. In the Exiles comic she has energy based powers as Sunfire like many of her relatives. In the 616 universe she is powerless but is still related to Shiro Yoshida, Leyu Yoshida, and Kenuichio Harada all who have energy based powers. My thought is that the mutation runs though the entire bloodline and that in this universe Mariko's powers were dormant.

The idea of latent mutants is also one aspect that has been dropped from comics and i have always liked the idea.

It certainly could be since mutants definitely run in blood lines. I think the romance worked better with her as a normal person but it could be a fun way to bring her back.

Oh I liked mariko as a normal human too, it was just a theory that she could have had latent mutant potential because her cousins and half-brother had mutant powers.

If this idea held true her children with Logan would have had some interesting powers, like flaming claws.

Or being constantly on fire in agony and never dying because of the healing factor. Now see that would suck.

it was actually in a book I read. Guy was sentenced to hell and that was his punishment. He burned forever, but the body continuously healed so he never got any respite from the pain.
