Well, Wolverine's claw does continue to star in this off-beat series by Chris Claremont. Aside from the uneven art, how are people enjoying the run? |

The only strong opinion I have of it these days is that I still consider the Kittyrine thing to be a horribly bad idea. It's pushing all the wrong buttons with me. |

As I said I was very meh on the whole issue. not much happened and it felt like it was an overdone plot with oddly warped characters. |

I guess the whole Kittyrine makes sense if you apply a deeper sense of symbolism to it. If you`re just looking for short and sweet enterainment, it just boggles you... |

I'm not sure what the symbolism would be? Innocence lost? Taking over your parent's legacy? I think anything can be spun as symbolic, but if it doesn't work practically, it's still a lousy move. Everything Claremont has said (on the Comixfan boards) about the Kittyrine deal has just made it seem worse and worse to me. Every "potential storyline" he brought up as something exciting to look forward to was something that has already been done with Wolverine. "What if her friends become scared of her?", "what if evil corporations want to use her?", "what if she goes insane and starts becoming a crazed murderer?". Sound familiar? The "multiple identity" thing was done with Rogue and Carol Danvers. It was fresh and new and interesting then, and made sense because it was a very plausible outcome from Rogue's unique powers, not to mention a sort of penance for what she did before becoming one of the good guys. It added to the stories of both characters. The Kittyrine thing relied on a contrived deus ex machina to make it happen and the identity crisis just reads as a half-hearted attempt to create yet another grrrr femme fatale of the kind that comes a dime a dozen these days. Kitty gets enough DNA from Wolverine to actually get confused about who she really is, but the only physical manifestation is a single claw? Claremont also attributed her new clothing sense to this - that she would suddenly want to start dressing with an "edge". Which is the final nail in the coffin for me - would Wolverine ever care about dressing with an "edge"?? No. Wolverine would wear whatever was comfortable/practical and a miniskirt ain't it. If she had started dressing in flannel shirts and cowboy boots, I could maybe have bought it more (but I would still have laughed). But clearly, this is more about creating the Kitty that he always wanted to create: a growly female Wolverine in leatherrrrr. Which is...not Kitty. This is pretty much a cheese-cakier version of X-23 and has nothing to do with who Kitty is. Edited by creaky, Oct 14 2009, 07:01 PM.

That's what I thought too. If Claremont wanted X-23 then introduce her. There is nothing to say she wasn't running around during this time and if her history is any indication she most likely was killing people. Leave Kitty alone and have the X-Men find Laura while hunting for Wolverine's past or something. |

Oh, she wears a mini skirt now?...I haven`t been keeping up to dat ewith the series (and somehow I`m not convinced I want to..) I`m guessing the claw could mean she`s taking on Logan`s legacy, since he was her mentor. Who knows, It`s weird and anti-Kitty-ish, but this is Claremont`s private palygorund and he did state he was oppsing these stories to the actual continuity: Wolverine`s everywhere - no WOlverine here; Kitty, develops, grows up a little and then is lost in space - Kitty gets immature, is fine and present and becomes a grr femme fatale. Like I said, Claremont`s world, Claremont`s rules, which is why I really don`t care what he comes up with; I`ve invested a whole lot in the post-Claremont continuity to just revert to his stories (and at the end of the day, I`m quite happy with the overall development of the X-Books). This just came up in my mind...so if Kitty`s confused over ther personality and has now borrowed some of Logan`s traits..will she start hitting opn Jeana s well, or will she just fall for the "doomed man"? ![]() And another thing that came into my mind...I think Claremont`s been trying to roughen Kitty up ever since he dressed her in spandex during the "X-Treme" run. Even the pose is similair...Scary.

(X-Treme Kitty competes with Kittyrine as being the worst Kitty ever.) Yeah, he's been working on roughening Kitty up since the Wolverine mini, and it's ALWAYS been reversed back - even by himself. Kitty gets ninjafied and loses her hair and becomes all mature and serious-like for some issues (also, starts wearing fishnets and a leather jacket!), then goes back to being cute innocent girl post-Mutant Massacre. In Excalibur she mostly got to be "normal" and grow up organically, but when she got back to the X-men she cut her hair and got two of Wolverine's claws. Then she got girlified again until it was time for another leather phase. (Then Whedon came along and reverted her to childhood, but that's beside the point.) Claremont has always wanted to do this to Kitty and it boggles me why. But then, he has kind of always had this thing for making his favorite females Wolverine-like. This is just the most blatant attempt yet. |
