Pretty good setup for the new direction and I was glad to see Emplate back. He is a bit silly but still a pretty interesting villain. Of course we are already seeing Nation X starting to back fire a bit so that is not good for its future. But that many mutants together in one place and all sorts of predators will come calling.

Still I think Rogue will do well in her new role and once again we get a spotlight on a underdeveloped (unused) character in the form of Bling (Roxy). Though she is not who I would have chosen it is always nice to get more characters in the mix as it were.

The backup story with Gambit was semi-important as they needed to destroy the machine but not sure of its purpose. If Cyclops is going to be making Gambit do one man espionage then it seems counter productive to have X-Force around. If it was just a one off then it was ok but nothing special. I did like the appearance of Apoc Gambit but he went back to normal far too quickly and it was really not needed in the fight.

I was going to post this as a comment on your review, but I think I'll do it here instead. More room to type.

This new direction has the possibility to be really interesting, and I'm already seeing that in even the smallest of details. For example, I was looking at the new meaning the title of the book takes on under the new direction. Previously X-Men: Legacy meant to look back and examine the past, whereas now it means the Legacy of the mutant race. The future of mutantkind. That's a lot of depth in the title alone.

I know that you and I had discussed previously about the New Mutants book hypothetically becoming a title for both the original team and the next generation. And while it's not New Mutants, it seems we are indeed getting that in some form. Which I'm oh-so happy about. I really wanted a new platform for the various mutant youngsters.

Though I'm not terribly fond of Bling. She's alright, I suppose. Interesting look, the possibility for an interesting personality, but her previous appearances were somewhat lacking. And I'm not at all a fan of that large stone fellow. Not Rockslide, the other one. Which is actually my issue. A big angry stone guy. It was original when Thing did it. It was less so when Rockslide did, but salvaged when he changed in appearance and gained the ability to shoot his limbs/etc. And then there's that other one... who is just a lesser copy of the first two.

Rogue's role in the book I really like. I noted in your review, jrpbsp, that you thought it strange for Cyclops to find her powers useful when she's just coming to control them herself. I think that that's a direct ramification of the Utopia tie-in issues. Rogue used her powers flawlessly against Ares and for Trance, proving that her powers are suited to such high-crisis situations.

So if a young mutant (ala Trance) flies out of control, she can calm them down, or best case scenario give them insights into their own abilities that even they may not know about. Guiding them both emotionally (as she did here), and in relation to their powers (as she did in the last couple of issues).

I am also loving her new look. Just like her previous green and white costume, it's based on her original costume as she first appeared. Except this one shows off her new found self-confidence and ability to flaunt her skin. It's light, it's airy, but it still captures the spirit of her original style.

As for Emplate, he is a bit silly in actuality, but in concept I rather like the idea of a mutant energy vampire. And I love his design. Long before I ever really knew who he was I loved his design, and although I now know more about him I still do. It's different from just about every other villain I've seen.

The second story was a bit odd. It was fun, but it was odd. I guess the point was to say "Don't worry! We haven't written out Gambit! He'll still have a place in some way". It almost felt like they were setting him up to join X-Force. Which might not be a bad fit given his other abilities, his place with but outside the X-Men, and his history as a thief.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm quite excited about where this is all going. Mike Carey has yet to let me down in regards to his X-Men/Legacy run.

Ah yes, I see what you mean now. I had skipped the synopsis as I had just read the issue.

The construction site on the Xavier grounds that jrpbsp mentioned seemed to be tearing down the remains of the institute and putting up some sort of larger structure. It looked to be either an office building, a shopping center, or condos/apartments. My money is on the latter as it's a residential area. They spoke of the school in the past tense, indicating that whatever was taking its place was in no way related.

Damn, I was hoping that they were rebuilding the school because I miss it. The synopsis also mention Thunderbird??? Is he fully returned, or was that supposed to read Warpath?

I think the purose of the story wasn't the mission or the machine, but the set up of a new status for Gambit, same principle than Angel/Archangel. I think there are going to be new plots with Gambit's horseman of Apocalypse persona.
