There has been much debate and discussion involving the idea that Wolverine is from a feral off-shoot of humanity. I agree with Ace on the idea that this is a bad idea and makes Logan's character less than human. For me Logan's powers always made sense without any fancy explaination because he is one of earliest mutants.

My idea has always been that the earliest mutants would primarily have powers that were physical and/or basic in nature rather than mental or energy based and/or complex.

Logan's powers are "wolf-like" and very simple and straightfoward.

Another very old mutant that we know of is Mystique and she is merely a shape-changer.

Now this does not always hold true, because there was Destiny, and she was a pre-cog, but in some ways that is a pretty simple power.

The is also Nathaniel Essex, but I have never really understood his powers.

Keep in mind that Poccy is the first mutant and his powers are pretty complex. He has complete control over the atoms of his body and can pretty much change himself at will to do whatever he wants/needs including, it appears, give himself over powers and abilities.

Sinister is not a mutant. His powers come from Poccy's experiments and his copying of mutant DNA into his body.

Namor has been around since WWII at least and his power is flight which is pretty simple but obviously an odd mutation for an underwater dweller.

Okay I will give you the first two, but my point kind of holds true for Namor, because his powers are primarily physical. I am not sure why he can fly either???

As an aside to Apocalypse I always thought he was sort of a lame villian.

Physical power yes but one that does not fit the whole survival/hunter thing. It is a power designed to help him evolve and change rather then fight and survive.

The mutants as part of the mutant boom Beast and the X-Club were investigating seem to have very basic abilities, but the oldest of the old mutants were all rather powerful. Namely Seline and Apocalypse. However, they were rare. They were the exception rather than the rule.

The mutant boom seems to have started when the world started employing nuclear energy. Hence "children of the atom". I believe it's suggested that ambient radiation is responsible for the huge influx of mutants in the last 100 or 200 years somewhere. Which is logical, given that until the atomic age there were virtually no mutants. And that the ones that did exist (again, Seline and Apocalypse) had encounters with energy sources. Seline with magic, and Apocalypse with Celestial technology.

Depends on how far you want to go back and how you want to define thing. All of the so called Externals are very old and immortal but not all of them are extremely powerful. They are simply immortal the way normal people are mortal.

I tend not to factor in the Externals because they suggest that Cannonball is one of them, which just completely flies in the face of everything we know about Cannonball. That whole matter is a bit too vague for my liking.

True it is though they are definitely mutants and we do know some of them are very old. The Cannonball idea, and in fact the whole story line, was bad. But it is canon so should be at least noted.

I'd rather burn them in effigy. But that's just me.
