Pure Sacrifice Parts One Through Four

This story revolves around the return of the little known villain named Abdul Alhazared. Alhazred has a number of abilities, which may be either magical or psionic in nature. He can teleport, usually appearing and disappearing in a cloud of green smoke. He can mesmerize others with a glance. He appears to possess superhuman strength and durability, but this may be only a reflection of his ability to control the perceptions of others. In addition, he is able to summon demon creatures from another realm, which obey his command. These demons may attack either physically or psychically. The ability to mentally resist psychic attack by the demons generates a powerful feedback that banishes him to the realm of his demons.

Alhazred sought to takeover the Madripoor crime empire of Tyger Tiger, to enable him to depose prince Baran, and establish Madripoor as his power base. He planned to barter with other countries for the extradition of criminals who had fled there. To this end, he had his ally, the Sheik organize a band of unrelated mercenaries. These men kidnapped Tyger Tiger and Archie Corrigan, but internal conflicts caused them to crash their plane in the jungles of Madripoor. From there, they were overpowered by Wolverine and sent to jail. Wolverine revealed that he was at least familiar with Alhazred and respected, if not feared, his power and wrath.

Sometime later, Alhazred himself attacked and overpowered Wolverine, and then kidnapped Tyger Tiger and Archie Corrigan. Wolverine disappeared after being thrown from a balcony. Desiring to slay Wolverine, Alhazred had his men watch over his two prisoners, until Wolverine arrived in an attempt to free them. Alhazred sent his demons after Wolverine, confident that they would send him into his berserker fury, which he could then control. However, when Logan resisted and maintained mental control of himself, the psychic backlash caused Alhazred to be banished to the extra-dimensional realm of his demons.

I should note that Logan does not use his claws a single time in this story.
In fact this story must take place shortly after Issue #75 where Logan is at his weakest. Average strong humans were more then a match for Logan in this condition since his healing factor was non existent at this time, Logan had to resort to stealth and regular weaponry to survive most of Alhazred's men. Logan's victory over Alhazred in this condition is extremely impressive, considering he had the advantage over Logan in every single way possible.

Jessan Hoan / Tyger Tiger

Jessan worked at her family's bank, Hoan International, when the Reavers robbed the bank. The Reavers kidnapped Jessan and killed several members of her family at the bank. While Jessan was a prisoner at the Reavers' Australian base, the Reaver named Pretty Boy tried to alter Jessan's mind so that she would join their criminal band as a financial expert. The X-Men interrupted the process, freed Jessan, and defeated the Reavers. The supernatural being Roma teleported Jessan back to her family's bank.

Jessan discovered that the Reavers had been hired to attack Hoan International bank by Roche, the crimelord of Madripoor. She moved to the island of Madripoor, where she became embroiled with the criminal element and adopted the alias Tiger Tyger. Wolverine later joined Jessan's efforts against Roche.

As Tiger Tyger, Jessan defeated Roche and became the new crimelord of Madripoor, but she refused to deal in either drugs or slavery. Wolverine allowed Tiger Tyger to operate, but decided to act as an ethical check on her enterprises.

The ruler of the Madripoor crime world, Tyger Tiger had often encountered Wolverine many times, most noticably in Wolverine #4-6 where Wolverine helped her to oust the existing crime boss and rule the Madripoor underworld. Though many years have passed, the two still maintains some contact with each other, most recently in Wolverine #98, where she gave him his costume and a cutting tool to escape while he was locked up in a prison.

Jessan Hoan's partial mental reprogramming granted her a high degree of martial art skill. She is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, and proficient at using fire-arms and hand-held weapons.

ROCHE

Roche was a powerful crimelord in Madripoor. He was hired by Meridian Bank to eliminate Hoan International Bank. To accomplish this, he hired the Reavers, who slew most members of the Hoan family. The Reavers kidnapped Jessan Hoan, and Pretty Boy performed psychic surgery on her so they could utilize her banking skills and eliminate her morality and scruples. The X-Men saved Hoan, rescuing her from the Reavers, forcing them to flee, and interrupt their attempts to mutate her.

Hoan was returned by Roma to the time and place immediately following the attack of the Reavers. She investigated and learned that Roche had been the one to send the Reavers after her family and business. Having been somewhat affected by Pretty Boy's assault, Hoan established the identity of Tyger Tiger, and started a war against Roche.

Wolverine traveled to Madripoor for some rest and relaxation, and encountered O'Donnell, owner of the Princess Bar as Roche's men were beating him for opposing his plans. Wolverine dispatched the criminals and ended up meeting Tyger and getting involved in her war against Roche. Roche had Razorfist slay the criminals that Wolverine had defeated, and then sent Sapphire Styx after him. Styx incapacitated and brought Wolverine back to Roche's palace, where Roche had his Inquisitor torture Logan in an effort to learn more about the Tyger. Logan was nearly killed in the process, but was recovered near death, floating in the sea by Tyger. Tyger nursed him back to health, and the two survived Roche's bombing of her ship.

Roche had O'Donnell abducted and had his Inquisitor torture him as well. Logan and Tyger returned, however, freed O'Donnell, and incapacitated or killed Roche's agents. Roche confronted them, wounding Logan, but was then beheaded by a battle-crazy Tyger. Tyger subsequently replaced Roche as a crimelord in Madripoor, taking over his territory and men.

Roche had access to a number of firearms, and was a reasonably talented marksman. He did not demonstrate any special skill in physical combat. He surrounded himself with a number of henchmen, and used a few superhuman agents. He was an experienced crimelord, and a skilled strategist (except for that not killing an enemy when you capture him mistake). Roche was very unforgiving, usually slaying those who failed him.

Roma

Daughter of Merlyn, Roma assisted her father in the empowering of many members of his inter-dimensional Corps of heroes. In her persona as "Lady of the Northern Skies" she was present the night that Brian Braddock was chosen to become Captain Britain, and watched as he took his first faltering steps down the road to becoming a hero.

Roma allied herself with the X-Men to battle a foe known as the Adversary, who seemed to take her captive, after the X-Men, including Captain Britain's sister Psylocke, seemingly died to power a spell cast by Forge to bind the Adversary, she revived them (even though this freed the powerful foe they had died to defeat), made them invisible to electronic detection, and gave them the Siege Perilous; the world believed them dead. She used shared grief to unite surviving X-Men Nightcrawler and Shadowcat with Meggan and Captain Britain, then bonded them together saving Rachel Summers, a.k.a. Phoenix

This was the last Wolverine story in Marvel Comics Presents before it got canceled.

I enjoyed these story arcs a lot because they fleshed out important parts of Wolverine's present and past. Without them we wouldn't of been treated to Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X story after all.
