Wolverine: The List

There's been a lot of fantastic reveals come out of Marvel over the last few days. Rogue will be returning to the X-Men and mentoring the new generation of mutants in X-Men: Legacy, a future arc of Amazing Spider-Man promises a return for Ben Reilly, and Norman Osborn gets proactive with Dark Reign: The List (among others).

However one of the biggest reveals for me personally was that Jason Aaron will be writing the Wolverine: The List story, and that the plot revolves around Norman Osborn trying to take control of Weapon Plus. Weapon Plus being one of my favorite additions to the X-Men mythos.
Quote:

The idea is that Norman wants to get his hands on the resources of the Weapon Plus program -- the program that created everybody from Captain America up through Wolverine up through the Super-Sentinels like Fantomex from the New X-Men run. So he wants control of the labs and the world that was introduced in Morrison's stuff. It's people with these sort of rejected experiments and artificially evolved cyborgs. And I think there's this whole culture and religion within this place. This is where Weapon Plus was creating their Super Sentinels.

Norman finds out that there are these highly advanced super soldiers out there, and he wants to make his own. He wants control of that.

And of course, Wolverine is going to be there to stop him. But also involved will be Fantomex, of course, who I love, from Morrison's New X-Men stuff. And also, just to make it even crazier, Marvel Boy. So it's me getting to play with some Morrison toys, which is a huge thrill because I'm a life-long Morrison fan since I first picked up Doom Patrol and Animal Man. Marvel Boy and his X-Men stuff are some of my favorite Marvel stories from the last few years. Marvel Boy in particular. I go back to that book every once in awhile because I think it's just a perfect comic, in a lot of ways. So you take all that and mix it up, and I think it's going to be an interesting comic.

Holy cow. This is an amazing revelation.

And what I love the most is that they aren't writing Weapon Plus out of existence. They are actually going to improve on it.

I think if there was ever a chance of the Weapon Plus idea being written out, it ended with the Wolverine film. As they picked up on the idea by calling Deadpool Weapon XI. And luckily its been referenced and outright followed up on in the mainstream Marvel continuity quite a few times since Grant Morrison left the books.

I agree.

What I'm trying to say is that I didn't want it to be forgotten about. Sort of like how they didn't flesh out Department K ? (I know that it's a bad example. Just can't think of a good one. ) But do you know what I mean? It sucks when they introduce new plots, then move on and forget about the old ones. :ohnoes:

Or they focus on old ones that don't need revisiting, like the Phoenix Force or how Logan met Professor X. :sigh: I hate that too.

I understand, that's always a bummer. Luckily there are some great writers out there who 20 years later will say "That was one of my favorite story elements growing up" and continue to the plotline. It's just a shame that takes so long. It's obviously preferable to keep the plotline alive to begin with. :p

Jason Aaron is doing a wonderful job of visiting parts of Logan's character and history that hasn't been explored in a long long time. In my opinion it has been too long since we've seen Logan as a martial artist (Wolverine: Manifest Destiny) or a tactical covert-opt operative (Wolverine: Weapon X). Every time he works on Logan's character he adds a new element that always leaves me impressed, like in his "A Mile In My Moccasins" which made me so happy as a Wolverine fan.

I am looking forward this so much.

While I have no love for the Weapon Plus story that simply confused an already complicated Weapon X plotline into silliness, I do think Aaron has a shot to make this a good one off. He has shown a lot of respect for Wolverine's character and maybe he can clean up the confusion and make this into an interesting aspect.

I don't know about showing yet another Weapon XI whatever. I think it's 13 or 14 but maybe it will work. I haven't seen anything yet that makes me doubt Aaron's ability to tell a good Wolverine story.

Self claimed fanfic critic.
I admit, i haven't read Weapon X, but i did read Aaron's 'Get Mystique' run and i enjoyed A Mile In My Moccasins very, very much.
If Mark Millar is the Godfather of Wolverine story lines, Jason Aaron is Al pachino.

Fantomex is a pretty interesting character. Fantomex is one of the most mysterious people in the Marvel Universe. He talks in a heavy French accent, which leads many people to believe that he is French, but he has revealed to some that he speaks with a French accent because he finds it distracts and annoys people. Regardless of the situation, Fantomex's plays his cards very close to the chest, with his true motivations often left unknown until the moment he decides to tip his hand.

Fantomex is a thief, a result of the Weapon Plus Program's experimentation with technological-human hybrids (Weapon XIII). He was born and was artificially "evolved" in The World, a man-made environment designed to create super-soldiers using Sentinel technology.

Fantomex contacted Wolverine and offered him information about his mysterious past if he helped Fantomex destroy Ultimaton, also known as Weapon XV, a deadly product of the Weapon Plus program. Fantomex, Wolverine, and the X-Men's Cyclops traveled to The World, an artificial, time-altering environment designed by the Weapon Plus program to quickly develop and evolve new generations of super-soldiers. The team was defeated by Ultimaton, who escaped by breaking through the barriers of The World and flying to the Weapon Plus space station.

The team pursued their target in E.V.A., Fantomex's biological spacecraft, and upon arriving at the space station Fantomex kept his word by showing Wolverine the complete Weapon Plus database. Shocked at learning the terrible details of his past (including his slaughtering of the entire population of Roanoke while under the influence of the Weapon Plus Program), Wolverine initiated the self-destruct sequence for the space station before catching and ultimately killing Ultimaton, who was also wondering about his condition. Fantomex and Cyclops escaped the explosion in one of the station's shuttles.

Fantomex is an artificially-evolved human. Fantomex is an engineered mutant with multiple 'brains' for independent parallel processing, 'nano-active blood'. Fantomex's primary nervous system is actually a detachable techno-organism called E.V.A.

E.V.A.: an autonomous entity manifesting his primary nervous system externally, with retractable landing legs, hovering and propulsion capabilities, morphing doorways, passenger room, and a machine consciousness. He can see through E.V.A.'s point of view and can take control of her movement. However, this requires extreme concentrations on the part of Fantomex. Moreover, E.V.A can fly "herself" and can generate bio-electric charges to be used as weapons. Fantomex is both telepathically and symbiotically linked to E.V.A. As a result, whenever E.V.A. is traumatized or injured, Fantomex experiences the same pain.

He claims to have produced E.V.A. through his mouth one day when he lost his voice while still in The World. She later continued to grow and changed form into a flying saucer. EVA is capable of independent thought, but acts as Fantomex's primary external nervous system. They share each others thoughts as well as emotions. His secondary nervous system is located in his body, but is not advanced. When using his secondary nervous system alone he is only able to see the world in black and white.

Aside from his more notable abilities, Fantomex possesses many other characteristics which are heightened beyond those of a normal human. He possesses superhuman agility, moving through fights and evading enemies better than most acrobats. He is an expert marksman, and is able to use this ability even when doing complicated acrobatic movements during a fight. He possesses enhanced strength, and is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant.

Read that and you don't wonder why I would rather forget about Morrison's run. His nervous system is an independently thinking flying saucer? I don't drink enough for that to make sense.
