A topic for our buddy Templedog Temp! My question is... "Why do you like Thunderbird so much?" Do you like James Proudstar (Warpath) as much as you like John Proudstar? |

I think I like Thunderbird so much because he is such a flawed character. I first read Giant-sized X-Men when i was about 11 years old and I made a connection with John Proudstar because he gave Cyclops such a hard time on that first mission. I also like the build of the character, the massive shoulders and chest just seem neat to me, and makes him more accessable than Colossus, because his powers were not so pronounced. I have said in other threads I like the tragic nature of Thunderbird, because he was so scarred by his vietnam war experiences that he wanted to make amends and prove himself as a hero. The sad part is John could most likely not live up to his own ideal of what a hero should be. I mean he set the bar so high even he could not meet it. The story that really made me a fan is the story from Classic X-Men #3. All of flashbacks of John as the various X-Men remember him is interesting because it shows how lonely and sad he really was. For Example when Thunderbird is in the danger room with Colossus and nightcrawler and is questioning where is life as an X-Man might lead, Nightcrawler replies with the question why does Thunderbird stay then. John replies that he has no where to go. For me that statement was such a cry of hopelessness it spoke volumes. I think for me I relate to Thunderbird because I have often felt like an outsider and failure and sometimes doubt the purpose of my life and if I am on the correct path. |

I do not dislike Warpath. For the most part I do not give him much thought. I kind of think of Warpath as Thunderbird part 2, and a paler shadow of his brother. When James impersonated this brother in Uncanny X-Men #193 I was excited at first because I thought it was John returning. I was so disappointed when I found out it was only James. |

Do not get me wrong I do not want thunderbird to be ressurrected. I would just like to see a mini-series or one-shot that uncovers his war experiences, and some more stories that show Thunderbird's early days at Xavier's school. There was a span of time ranging from a month to a couple months that passed as the X-Men trained before they fought Count Nefaria. As an aside that is what confuses me about the new Uncanny X-Men: First Class series. the series is supposed to cover the new X-Men's early days, where they are still getting to know each other, but the series starts after issues #107-108. The idea to start the series here confuses me because the new X-men have been together over a year at that point should know each other pretty well. |

I agree 100% about that problem with Uncanny First Class. It wouldn't of taken much effort to have him in the first couple of issues. Besides X-men, what are the other comics you read? |

Ms. Marvel is really good. I read a lot of older stuff in the Marvel Essentials and DC Showcases. About the only X-titles I search out are the First Class titles, although I do pick up Wolverine Origins on occassion. I read Planetary when it was out, and right now I am on a Conan kick and reading all the old Marvel stuff that Dark horse is reprinting. I want to start reading more of X-Force and the "new" New Mutants series. |

It is an homage of sorts to a band, Temple of the Dog. It is an old grunge band from the early 90s. I am a big grunge music fan. |

I agree, they could have started the series right after the morning that the old X-Men left and started from there. I mean give us three issues with Thunderbird at max. Show us how Cyclops deals with all of these new people living at the mansion. Show us how Storm decided to refuse her original room and move up into the attic. Show us how the X-Men discovered Harry's Hideaway. Even though i am not a fan of the charcters show us how Cyclops and Jean Grey deal with her decision to move into Manhattan. |

Well keep in mind currently this is an eight issue mini so it may have a single over reaching story. If that is the case then it is hard to write out a character in the mid stream. Of course reading the solicits, it sounds like it will probably be all self-contained but we'll see how they do it. |
