Claws and Webs Parts One Through Six.

You get what you see with these six different covers. A mindless and unimportant astral battle between Wolverine and the Eddie Brock Venom. They fight on the astral plane because Nightmare brought them both there. Supposedly he wanted something important from Logan that he can only obtain through fear. So he summoned Venom to do battle with Logan in hopes that he would achieve that fear.

I'm assuming this story was written by Sam Kieth since it is also drawn by Sam Kieth. It plays out like a issue from Sam Kieth's The Maxx, complete with the bizarre monsters and landscape. Sometimes Logan looks a lot like the Maxx and sometimes Nightmare looks like a silhouette of Mr.Gone.

I have no complaints about the artwork, the above is just my observations since I'm a fan of his work. It probably is the only strong point of the mediocre story, since the first five parts is just Logan and Venom smacking each other around. Venom knocks Logan onto a tree where he gets impaled by a branch. Then they knock each other down a waterfall, then Logan stabs Venom in the stomach. Blah blah blah. Usually Sam Kieth's strong points is dark humor, followed by psychological type of drama.

I would of loved to see these two go full out crazy on each other. But it seems the writers aren't allowed to do this. I guess because the can't let either of these characters die and Wolverine's healing factor wasn't that powerful back then. I would like to see this story revisited maybe in a MAX book someday, I'm sure there is untapped potential that many of us fans would love to see.

Agreed
Venom and Wolverine are charectures that are willing to tear pounds of flesh off each other.
I do hope this will get revisited in a Wolverine issue or indeed a MAx mini series

At the end it is revealed that Nightmare wanted to use Logan to invade Professor X's mind. He knew Logan would ask Professor X for help, which is how Logan was able to retain a solid form in the astral plane. I suppose Venom was able to retain a solid form from his alien suit....

Anyway, Professor X was one step ahead of Nightmare, he had already figured out what Nightmare wanted. So Logan reached Nightmare with psychic endowed energy from Xavier, and servery damaged Nightmare and sent him running. When poor Venom asks if this will help him too, Logan responds with a casual "I don't know"

I have one question though...

How did Eddie Brock become Anti Venom ?

Wolveirne and Venom duke it out in Nightmares realm, Wolverine gets distracted in the first part of their fight and pays for it, the next time he fights Venom, they basically stalemate one another but Venom get's knocked unconcious longer than Wolverine does.

Thanks for the scans once again Jinzin. :approval:

A couple amendments to that. Eddie actually had the cancer before he gave up the symbiote. In fact, the story in which that was revealed originally (in Spectacular Spider-Man volume 2) suggested that Eddie's cancer predated bonding with the symbiote, and that the suit bonded with him because of his hatred for Spider-Man/Peter Parker and the rare form of adrenal cancer that was threatening Eddie's life (adrenaline being something the symbiote race is addicted to).

The suit then fed off the cancer and kept Eddie alive for years in doing so. Which is why when he decided to give up the symbiote and commit suicide, one way or another he was going to die. So he attempted to rush the process by slitting his wrists. Which failed.

Over the months the cancer gradually ate away at his body to the point where the once "Olympic gymnast" level Eddie Brock was now just a withered husk of his previous form. While laying in the hospital dying it was revealed that Eddie was hallucinating, seeing the symbiote in his mind telling him to do things. Saying that he would always be Venom, etc etc.

Some time later, Eddie, living out his last days helping out the homeless found that after contact with Mr. Negative's alter ego, Mr. Lee (I don't recall his first name) his chronic adrenal cancer had all but disappeared. It was also revealed that the reason he had been seeing hallucinations of Venom was because their were some residual bits of the symbiote still in his system. And after said contact with Mr. Negative those remaining bits were transformed along with his cancer, allowing Eddie to become Anti-Venom.

Not a problem, all things Venom are pretty much my one and only area of expertise. It's good to see I can put it to use. :p
