Male Bonding Parts 1-8

I don't know if anyone remembers the Neuri that I mentioned in my Bloodlust Review. Apparently in this series a group of them wandered away from the main pack, and tried to live peaceful lives in Germany.

Nightcrawler is called back to his old friend Jutta who was part of his circus troupe a long time ago. Jutta tricks Kurt into believing that the Neuri have been murdering innocent people. He is unaware of her true motives, she has been on a quest to kill them all since Kurt left to join the X-Men. Her and the rest of the troupe went under scientific experiments, gaining super powers and driving them more crazy in their quest for vengeance.

One of the Neuri tries reaching out to Kurt for protection, but Jutta kills him and then fools Kurt into believing it was the Neuri who killed him. Logan meets up with Kurt for the first time since his alleged death way back in Uncanny X-Men #226. Kurt holds Logan in contempt for not even letting him know he was still alive, causing Logan to feel bad for taking so long to reunite with his friend. During that time Kurt has helped create Excalibur and has been doing his own thing.

Yet Logan's kind words reach Kurt, especially when he admits to Kurt that he values their friendship. They finally reach the Neuri village where they find out they were used by Jutta and the angry mob, They needed them to find the village for them. Jutta starts to slaughter the peaceful Neuri who flea to a church, where the villagers and troupe burn to the ground. Logan kills Jutta and the rest of the troupe, while Kurt helps a single surviving Neuri save a few who got caught under the rubble of the burning church.

The villagers finally recognize how horrible they are, when they see the Neuri help save their family. The last remaining Neuri is burned alive by the dying Jutta, his final request is to return to the corpses of his children and wife. Logan and Kurt honor his request, later they reflect on the horror committed by the town which is the story of their lives.

The whole issue deals with persecution and racism that Logan and Kurt should be familiar with. The villagers hunt down the Neuri relentlessly for being different, despite the fact that they live their lives in harmony as poor farmers. Even though it is not shown on the pages, a lot of innocent Neuri children are burned alive by the angry mob that set's their church on fire. I'm a little annoyed that Kurt was manipulated by Jetta so easily, when he faced the same persecution all his life. Same goes for Logan.

Nitpicks aside the issue is a fun "male bonding" story between Kurt and Logan. There must of been some budget cutbacks during this issue's run, since too many colors bleed together and harm the reading enjoyment. Wolverine's costumes melts together, even his face under the cowl looks beat red for no reason. That aside with the less then average art makes the impact of the story less enjoyable. But again this is small nitpicking.

This story takes place shorty after X-Men #7 volume 2. Logan says he was able to track down Kurt's wearabouts tanks to Maverick. ah, the good old days when Marvel connected all the titles like this.

It would work better in a trade paper back

mostly because each issue only has eight pages of story.

some of the mcp trades only collect 6-8 issues usually. I could handle it if they printed one large trade collecting all the uncollected stuff though.

As is often the case with Scott Lobdell's work, the characterization here is the strongest part, while the actual story is kinda "meh". (Although hey, boneless clowns and a lady with a prehensile beard!). Germany is apparently still stuck in the 1800s. And there's a needless repeat of Kurt vs Mob at the beginning of one issue, which isn't built up to at all, it just comes out of nowhere.
But what's important here is that these two got to reunite. It's a funny thing - Marvel apparently does see a value in this friendship, because they've never let it die, like they have with so many others. I like Logan's line when they hug (a scene which some think is out-of-character and some love). "What do you say to a former best buddy you haven't seen in ages? If you're close enough, you don't have to say a word". I think that last sentence sums up the nature of their friendship very well.
