I know that I am going to get flak for this, but I do not see Magneto as absolutely evil. He is a man who is dedicated to protecting his people, mutantkind and will do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal. In Magneto's mind his actions are justified and he will behave like a hero if it services his purpose. We have seen Lex Luthor and Dr. Doom do the same thing.

Basically good Magneto started to turn back after the death of Doug Ramsey. He was left in charge of the kids and felt he failed miserably. He started hanging around the Hellfire club more as the white king. During in Inferno the kids drifted away with X-Factor and Magneto really started going back to his more violent ways. It was a gradual but definite slide.
Personally prefer this explanation better. I like that he gradually went back to his old ways, instead of just flipping out on the Avengers and declaring he is back to being a villain. I mean it shows that he was actually trying to embrace Xavier's dream and final wishes.

I like that explantion as well. He tried to embrace Xavier's ideals, but he just could not do it, because he seemed to fail with the new mutants so often. I mean Xavier has abandoned his dream and walked away when the pressues and losses have become too great.

He did legitimately give it a try. He has berated Xavier a couple time because he tried the Prof's way but X never tried his way so could not judge. Magneto was thrown into the soup given kids to watch and the X-Men to help and he did pretty well for a while. But when things started going bad (the X-Men died, Doug died etc) he started to revert to his old ways. Just not in his nature to be good.

Like i said before I do not see Magneto as evil because if you take into account all the things that Jrpbsp mentioned a lot of people would have a tough time dealing with this. In addition when Magneto was in charge of the school the New Mutants were even wiped out of exsistance by the Beyonder.

I think that Magneto was so ill-suited to be a teacher. i do not think that he had ever done it before. by the time that the New Mutants came along Xavier had taught over twenty students and had skill at it.

Also in that period of time was when the Mutant Massacre started the level of brutality in the mutant world escalated like ten-fold and the New Mutants always seemed to jump into the fray headfirst.

Well they were kids. Kids tend to think they are invincible. But yeah the Beyonder thing really through them for a loop. I remember Magneto had to turn to Emma for help and the New Mutants even joined the Hellions for a little while for psychic treatment.
