![]() What If Wolverine Had Lived During the Age of Conan the Barbarian? The cover of this book advertises it as a "What if Conan battled Conan the Barbarian", which I assume is because the former is way too long to put on a comic book cover. But I disgress this is probably my favorite What If book ever. Most What If books don't create original stories like this, they only show a reality in which everything went terribly wrong. It's the same apocaylptic scenario or bad ending in every story because someone or something was removed from the equation. However this might be true for this book as well, but at least we get to see the main character enter a whole new reality. If you remember the original Dark Phoenix Saga, you might remember when Logan was wandering around the Watcher's sanctuary. Well this story shows what would of happened if the Watcher had allowed Logan to stumble through the various diverges of time and space that existed in his domain. It seems that he would of eventually been thrown into Hyborian age where Logan is going to fit right at home. Logan finds himself in a whole new world and we get to see him adapt in how own way. The situation is actually comical because he basically mugs someone for new cloths and some cash for food. In Conan's world everyone speaks a different language and has different customs. So Logan has to get by on his own without understanding a word that comes out of anyone's mouth. He meets Red Sonja by accident when the person he mugs happens to be in the same military she serves in. In case you aren't familiar with who Red Sonja is, she is a skilled fighter who vowed to sleep with only the man who can beat her in combat. So when Logan is able to take her down, she is very shocked to see that he passes up the offer. Meanwhile Conan is being manipulated by a evil sorcerer who promises to resurrect his dead lover, Conan reluctanly complies and agrees to kidnap the sorcerer's enemy. Unfortunately the person Conan has to kidnap is also the priest that Red Sonja serves under. ![]() Conan ends up defeating Wolverine stabbing Logan in the neck with his sword, then he kidnaps both the priest and Red Sonja afterward. We find out that the sorcerer named Zukala needs to sacrifice Sonja's life in exchange for bringing back Conan's dead girlfriend. Conan once again agrees to doing anything Zukala wants, as long as it will bring his dead lover. However he is shocked and amazed when he see's a bloody and pissed off feral Logan enraged over what he is going to do to Sonja. Logan and Conan fight again, this time he chops off Conan's hand and then turns his attention to Zukala. The evil sorcerer frantically searches for a way to send Logan back to his own time, then discovers how Logan got to his world and tries to convince Logan to go back. He even uses a communication spell that allows Logan to understand the language everyone is speaking. Logan remains confused and probably suspects this is a trap, while Conan finally comes to his senses and tries to help Red Sonja escape. Zukula summons a demon to kill Conan, which instead throws Conan into the portal that Logan was suppose to use to get back home. Logan uses Zukula's scepter to send the demon back to hell, then chops off Zukula's head. With both the Priest and Red Sonja saved we see a sort of epilogue where Logan and Sonja are suppose to live happily ever after together. Through out the book Logan remarks at how much Sonja looks like Jean, so seeing this pair get together made me really happy. Unfortunately for Conan he ends up going back to a world doomed by the Dark Phoenix, which really does suck for him. I like a lot of things about this book, primarily how Logan has the advantage over all those with a sword. Poor Conan breaks several swords against both Logan's claws and bones. I didn't really care for the art, but then again it did fit with the dark fantasy theme going on. There was a few things skipped over in this review, but hopefully you agree that this isn't the normal What If book we usually get. I really felt that it was taken in a different direction then most What if books end up in. Especially since it isn't every day that Logan meets up with another legend like Conan the Barbarian. The only way I would be more surprised is if Luke Skywalker and Logan teamed up. Oh and the book ends with Logan marrying Red Sonja! How cool is that? It is confirmed in the little passage where they are riding on horses together. Our hero finally gets a happy ending after all! ![]() clicky to read another review. |

I'm very pleasantly suprised of this 'team-up' of sorts. Normally tie-ins and cameos like these suck the root, but the storyline and charectures do keep you reading. Though i have to admit, Conan's charecture was a bit diffirent from what i know, even though he is Chaotic Good like Wolverine, he wouldn't kill people to do so. Overall i think it's a good issue from what i'm reading, and i'll try to hunt it down. |

It was a pretty amusing comic, Wolverine did really fit in well with the whole swords and sandals period. I like that they had the language barrier too. |

There is more then one Conan universe, I assume he is portrayed a bit differently in all of them. For example the offical Conan wiki that I link to in my opening post doesn't credit Red Sonja as a offical Conan character. That really did surprise me.

I allways presumed Red Sonja was in the same universe as Conan, Chimera. But then again she could be like Sheena the she-devil, who alternates between MArvel Universe and somewhere else. |
