![]() Artist: Rob Liefeld To be honest we all know that the What If's will never be oscar nominating pieces of literature. They are usually meant to be canon fodder for those looking for quick pieces of entertainment that are the equivalent of a one night stand. Instead of getting angry how preposterous or inaccurately represented our beloved characters are, you simply got to take it for what it is and enjoy the show. In the end it's just a comic book fellas and that is my motto when I approach each What IF Comic I review this month. I started out with issue 7 of volume two which is basically a "What if Wolverine was approached by Nick Fury instead of Professor X?" scenario. Nick Fury is having trouble locating robot spys within the ranks of SHIELD and he needs Logan's help to locate and destroy them all. So what better way to showcase Logan letting loose, then to have him slice and dice robot androids? Weeeeeeeee. Toward the end of the book, Nick Fury dies taking out Baron Strucker, Following his friends death Logan accepts his position as director of SHIELD and becomes a major influences in defending Mutant rights. (Such as halting the production of Sentinels and discrediting Senator Robert Kelly's Mutant Registration Act.) Rob Liefeld is a hit and miss with this book, his drawings of Wolverine are sometimes good and other times horrifyingly bad. I respect the guy for sticking with Marvel and for being the creator of Deadpool, but my god he really did screw up Wolverine's arms on one page. Logan's arms were so small that he looked like a Tyrannosaurus Rex. This issue comes with a bonus "What if Aunt May had Claws?" single page. As well as a hilarious "What if Punisher didn't use guns" panel. In which Frank resorts to spanking criminals instead of killing them. ![]() Clicky for Reference |

One thing that I never understood about the story is the coloring of some of the costumes. Who ever hear of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that dresses in yellow and orange???. I am a fan of this story despite the Liefeld artwork.

Well he wears the blue suit at the end right? What I don't get is the blue cuff bracelet on his (left?) arm. Is that just something Leifield puts on every character he draws? |

I was thinking of Dum Dum Dugan's costume. It seems like all that Dugan is just cannon fodder in the Nick Fury stories anymore. I would like to see Dum Dum Dugan as a guy who is well past his prime, but a force to be reckoned with and can still kick ass when the need arises. |

I actually started collecting the What Ifs back in the day and do remember this story as actually one of the better one (unfortunately). Most of them are so bad that I stopped making any effort to collect. You can only read everyone dying and the Earth being destroyed so many times. At least Wolverine gets to be important in this one. |
