Not a bad book at all. It does a great job of showing how Logan makes a great leader.

Anyone else read this?

The issue comes off as a mix message. The main character (Sean Bernard ) tells the story from his perspective and we get to see how "The Flight" was born. This is the very first incarnation of Alpha Flight and we can see how almost none of these characters work well together. Despite the fact that Logan doesn't get along with James, Logan is faithful and helps the team and gives them orders like a good leader.

On the other side of the fence, Egghead gets the Rhino, Swordsman, Powerman, and a few others to become his personal super villain team. He also reveals his plan to drop a atomic bomb on NY, if the president of the United States doesn't follow his demands for some cliche scheme. The Flight go to the rescue and Logan start the battle by slicking through the Rhino's costume. Surprisingly Logan shows his endurance by trading punches with Powerman as well.

The Flight manage to stop the nuclear bomb from being sent to N.Y., however Egghead sets off the detonation. One thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that Bernard condemns Logan's actions for threatening to kill Egghead. However in the beginning of the book Bernard has no problems killing crooked cops just like the Punisher. Anyways the day is saved when the Flight's northern god Saint Elmo sacrifices himself to absorb the raw energy of the atomic bomb.

It was a nice trip down memory lane and I really liked seeing Logan be in charge of Alpha Flight. I don't know if I liked the story (especially Sean Bernard) however it is a good glimpse of how things were back then.

I'm not sure how or why Saint Elmo joined the first version of Alpha Flight. Judging by how so close he was to the team and what it stood for, I assume he knew them for a long enough time. He claims to be the keeper of the northern lights and over a thousand years old.

I don't really much care for this guy or understand why James wanted him on the team so bad. I know he was briefly mentioned to have some skills of some sort. I understand that he was essential from the readers perspective, sort of plot device to give readers a unique perspective. However I can't help but feel this guy is very unlikable for being such a schmuck to Logan and James Hudson.

I liked it because it showed Alpha Flight's early days. I wish that they would give us more stories from this period in Wolvie and Department H history.

Logan is faithful and helps the team and gives them orders like a good leader.

If I remember this comic accurately the whole mission fell apart pretty quickly. Logan was trying to lead the team, but the other flight members were too inexperienced and he was too used to acting as a solo agent to effectively lead a team. Do not get me wrong I love the comic I just think that it shows a very good example of how unprepared Wolvie was to be a team leader. James Hudson always wanted Wolverine to lead Alpha Flight, but even Logan knew that he was not ready.

Even now as leader of X-Force Wolverine does not seem entirely comfortable in the role, but I think that his discomfort has more to do with the "black-ops/wet-works nature" of X-Force's missions. Mainly he does not want the other members to have to kill and "get bloody".

Actually the mission falls apart because The Flight wasn't ready for the field period. Logan gets into an argument with James MacDonald Hudson about this and warns him that they are too green, so does the Shamen, yet James is persistent about this and pushes forward anyways. Logan does not go off by himself or acts out in a way that gets the team in danger. I only noticed the other team members like Smart Alec for example, who folds under pressure and can't think properly with all the fighting going on.

Through out the battle Logan is looking out for his team mates and does make sure they all don't get themselves killed. I agree that he does snap and is willing to chop off ugly mug that belongs to Egghead when he refuses to disarm the bomb, that bad temper he is 100% guilty of and probably gives a bad example to his teammates.

yeah the bad temper part is what I was remembering Logan doing. I just saw that Logan became easily preoccupied with Egghead when he should have been dealing with the bomb. Logan trusted the other flight members to handle the bomb, but you like you said they were not ready.

I would have liked to learn more about St. Elmo though, because he seemed interesting.

Well that is because Smart Alec has proved himself to be a genius and we all know Logan can't diffuse a bomb himself. It really isn't fair to judge Logan for not knowing better, since he was the perfect person to stop the bomb. The only hope Logan saw was to scare Egghead into stopping the bomb himself. Maybe he believed Egghead wasn't going to commit suicide? who really knows for sure.

Like I said I really like the comic because it shows Alpha Flight's early days and basically why the first team did not work.

I will say one thing is that James Hudson's recruitment techniques really need some work. Hudson often recruited from hospitals and prisons. So let's review.

Wolverine, a feral wild-man that he and heather found wandering in a state park.

Stitch, a psychologically damaged girl.

Wildchild, another psychotic, feral wild man

Madison Jefferies, a former mental patient

Roger Bochs, a former mental patient

Micheal Two-youngmen, a recluse doctor

Puck was recruited from prison

Aurora, a girl with a split personality

Bedlam, a psychotic mass murderer.

Seriously. It's like he places all of his hopes and dreams in damaged borderline psychos or former crooks and criminals. The writers were trying to copy the "Wolverine formula", but instead ended up making a mockery of themselves.
