Wolverine / Doop #1 - 2

Peter Milligan - writer
Darwyn Cooke - artist

One reason I really liked this two issue mini series is that writer let's go of the cliche "berserker" Logan that most writers fall into and completely rely on Logan's intelligence. If only most writers would do this, then maybe the percentage of Wolverine haters would dwindle a little bit. That aside this book is really well written and a lot of fun to read. Appearances can be deceiving and I wasn't sure that I would like this book, but my Wolverine completest nature took over and I gave it a chance. Not one part of me regrets tracking down a copy, this was a very amusing detective/ buddy story.

The detective story doesn't hit a single low point and goes through the motions in a very comedic way. Sure this may not be the typical Wolverine that you would expect, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing either. The interactions between Doop and Logan are hilarious and you find yourself very satisfied by the end of the book. Usually I tell myself that some comics could of been better if they were just a few issues longer. However with what Peter Milligan accomplishes in only two single issues, I have to say that he pulls it off marvelously.

The artwork by Darwyn Cooke is fantastic and he even makes the Pink Lady really attractive. It works well with the atmosphere of the story and I wouldn't have it any other way. It reminded me of how fun his early work on Batman the Animated series was. I really enjoyed his take on Wolverine and Doop's adventure, to be honest I wouldn't mind reading some more.

The story is pretty simple. A mystical Pink Mink is stolen and Wolverine accidentally releases the Pink Lady inside of it by accident What follows is a outbreak of the Code X gene, which is the mutant equivalent of manic paranoia. At first no one believes that the Pink Lady is real, until Doop himself starts to see her and falls in love with her. What follows is a series of adventures which lead to betrayal and even some conflict between the friendship of Doop and Wolverine.

The Pink Lady

A mysterious pink manifestation that is released whenever the pink pink fur is released. (When the fur it's oxygen she is can manifest into a corporeal state) Those who interact with her become obsessed or infatuated. Her charm effects all mutants and causes Wolverine to lust after her. Wolverine doesn't seem to have a problem with this however and ends up sleeping with her in the end.

I appears she is also responsible for causing various other mutants to turn pink and go insane. I assume after sleeping with Logan, she goes back to where she comes from. Because X-Static and The X-Men believe Logan and Doop when they turn in the fake duplicate of the Pink Mink, in order to stop various organizations from hunting down the Pink Lady.

Probably one of the coolest sidekicks Logan has ever got. The only description I can give Doop is that he is really weird and belongs to the team X-Static. Apparently him and Logan are friends and are already familiar with each other before the story even takes place. Also Logan can understand his weird alien language with no problem at all, which isn't that special considering a lot of other people have no problem understanding it.

Wolverine and Doop chat like Han Solo and Chewy....How cool is that?

Yeah. I guess Logan doesn't hesitate to sleep with beautiful women, no matter where they came from or what they are made out of .
