1943, during the invasion of Sicily, three soldiers, (American privates Fisk (the grandfather of The Kingpin) and Nicholas Fury, and Canadian soldier James Howlett), attempt to loot a house. Military police arrive to arrest them, and all three are subdued. Fisk is grazed by a bullet, while Fury and Howlett, despite the latter's protests that he's Canadian, are shipped off to separate unknown locations.

Howlett awakens in a tank of water inside the Weapon X complex. He escapes the complex, but is fatally shot as he nears freedom. Miraculously, Howlett's wound heals completely and he is recaptured. Dr. Cornelius, Weapon X's head scientist, explains that in attempting to create their own version of Captain America, Weapon X accidentally discovered a genome that, when genetically altered, grants the person carrying it various abilities based on their DNA. He calls these altered humans “mutants", (with Howlett as "Mutant Zero"), and states that mutants will be how humanity survives

Later, a teenaged Erik Lehnsherr visits the Weapon X complex and sets Wolverine free, letting him know that his name is James. When Magneto's mother tries to stop him, he murders her and proclaims that he hopes there "is a hell." Before his mother's death, she justifies her work with Weapon X by declaring that she only wanted to find a cure for Erik and the others.

Ultimate Origins #1 indicates that the mutant gene itself is a product of super soldier experiments on Wolverine. So I am guessing Weapon X created the mutant gene in Wolverine and then experimented on more people afterward. I don't think this means all the mutants on Earth 1610 are descendants or related to Wolverine, my guess is that they dispersed the mutant gene through consumer products or fake vaccines. It is the only logical explanation I can come up with.

In the end this was just a cheap way to say that James Howlett was the first artificial mutant or whatever. Which means Ultimate Wolverine was born as a normal human being who was kidnapped for the recreation of the super solider serum.

Any theories?

Actually I thought he was a real mutant and they synthesized the gene as well as a whole bunch of other things from him.

Sadly I don't think this is the case since various other sites pretty much confirm this as well.

How do you think they spread this gene to over 100 different people/mutants anyway? Since people in this world weren't born as mutants.

Guess it just depends on how you end up reading it. I went with they were experimenting on him and it caused his latent mutant abilities to show up. I guess you can go with either way, don't remember it being spelled out exactly.

You are right. The series does remain vague and leaves too many questions open.

But one thing that remains clear is that he got his powers from the scientists. He would of remained normal if they didn't kidnap him and alter his body.

I'm going to try again...."Do you think they spread out the mutant gene to civilians? any theories on how?"

I don't believe they had to spread anything to anyone randomly. It would not make any sense to artificially trigger a bunch of mutants that you couldn't control. If Weapon X showed anything it's that they were trying to make mutants as weapons that they could point and aim with. Making something like Magneto or Xavier is suicidal not to mention the sheer numbers that started to appear. I still believe that the mutants were a natural or quasi-natural phenomenon that might was first discovered in Wolverine.

I hope you are right about that.

Because it was really dumb to say Logan wasn't born a mutant and then not explain any further. (clicky) A lot of sites say that he had his DNA altered to become the very first mutant. Why wouldn't any mutants be born before that?

Dunno, Origin did not make a lot of sense. It was supposed to tie everything together and in the end it just confused things.

How would you like to see the Ultimate Universe rebooted?

I liked it when it started honestly. Different takes, limited characters and the feeling that any of them could be killed/altered/destroyed at any point. Now it's just a skewed version of 616.
