Let's talk about the plus and minuses of Healing Factors.

Did you know that Deadpool's healing factor is more efficent when he is alert and in good spirits? I remember reading this in one of his titles and I was reminded in Marvel's wonderful handbook.

But the downside is that his healing factor regenerates at such a hyper accelerated rate that his sanity and memories suffer regular damage. Which could be why his origin is such a mystery. (regarding if he is Jack or Wade Wilson.)

I should also note that Wade has a extended life span and it was never revealed how old he really is. Anyone have a guesses?

I think a healing factor would burn up a lot of proteins, vitamins and minerals. Normal healing reqcuires a great amount of resources, so it would only be logical that accelerated healing would reqcuire even more resources, especially if the damage is pretty bad (as in, regular Logan/Deadpool stuff, hehe)

The poor guys would have to eat maybe twice as much as a normal human being (or more, depending on the extent of the injuries) and good healthy food too!

I wouldn't think that would apply to Logan and Deadpool. Hunger is your stomach attempting to digest something that isn't there, and instead digesting itself. To put it in the necessary terms, it's your stomach wounding itself. Meaning their healing factors would work against hunger, seeing it as a foreign wound.

So while I think in most cases you'd be right, in the case of Logan, Deadpool, or even the Hulk they shouldn't need food. That said, Wolverine should never actually be hungry by that logic. And as we all know he still eats and feels hunger. Perhaps it's purely psychological, or something he does for normalcy.

However, most superhumans do have a healing factor of sorts. Spider-Man, most mutants, etc. They all seem to have a low level healing factor that allows them to heal up quicker. Spidey's has been mentioned on occasion. A wound that would take a normal person weeks to heal, he can down a bottle of painkillers and be good in a few days.

I suspect this exists more so as a plot device to increase storytelling possibilities than anything else. If every superhero took months to heal from a broken leg, their stories would be few and far between.

Actually what you are describing is the last sensation in the chain. The sensation originates in the hypothalamus and it is a signal to the body that it needs to replenish its resources. Then, the hypothalamus releases hormones which make one seek food and it is this behaviour that causes the reaction in the stomach, as it secrets enzimes in order to receive said food.

Even if Wolverine has incredible stamina and endurance and can heal ulcerations, he would still need to replenish the substances his body produced to regenrate new tissue (be it stomach ulceration, caused by prolongued hunger or other injuries). No body can sustain itself infinetly without taking in and porcessing new matter to replace the one that`s been used. That is because matter used in the body is not recycled, it is simply thrown out; while passing thought the body`s different systems, nutrients are taken out of ingested matter by each system according to its needs, until nothing that can feed a person on any level is left. That is why the remains are eliminated.

I remember Logan slicing off pieces of himself for food. Anyone else remember that little known fact of Logan's life? I think it was mention in Grant Morrison's New X-Men.

Well you know far more about digestion than I do, it seems. :p

As for the regeneration of tissue, I don't think that applies in Wolverine's case. His body must make its own vitamins and nutrients. He's in beyond perfect shape without ever lifting a finger. He can regenerate most of his body from virtually no tissue. Etc. His healing factor seems to be beyond the norm of the standard human healing process.

It's to the point where I wonder if his teeth were dirty if his healing factor would simply clean them viewing the plaque and whatnot as a foreign contamination.

Biology/anatomy is kind of a hobby of mine ^^

And I believe the idea that Logan`s healing factor was mentioned in the comics as well, during the Hama run; the story was "Valley o` Death" I believe, the part when he gets shot by a patrol in the desert and left for dead. The angel figure tells him he has to replenish his forces so he kills some buzzards and eats that. Ew.

Yeah. The angel he's hallucinating in that run says that his healing factor can't work with out protein.
and I think it's being implied elsewhere that healing leaves him feeling hungry. This would make sense, think of speedster's needing more food to keep up with thier metabolism, so Wolverine (and most others with healing factors) would need more protein ect.
Which when you think of what we see Wolverine eating, might explain how he stays in shape.

In my opinion this is how his healing factor should always be:

Do you know anything about Phantom Pains? In this short story, Logan says he experiences phantom pains long after the wound is already healed.

I like that story..I read it a while a go and was pleasantly suprised by the extend of Logan`s anatomical knowledge (well, it figures, if you ask me). As far as I know, it`s the only story that mentions the Phantom Pains (poor guy :( ).
