So this is the book that is commonly marked as a expendable storyline. Mostly because it is the most slow paced story out of all of them. Which is a shame because I think once it's finished, it will become another essential story arc for the X-Men. (Just like Whedon's was)

You can see how I feel about the series in this topic. Great art, and Ellis has a great grasp of the characters, but the storyline itself is a bit bizarre. And the Ghost Box spin-off is even more bizarre than the core storyline.

It seems at some point Warren Ellis's plans for the book changed. This image was promoted as part of his astonishing run, but it's not indicative of the actual story. Kitty Pryde isn't part of the book, X-23 has never been in an issue of Astonishing; and while that is Simone Bianchi art, those aren't his new costume designs.

In addition, when his run was originally promoted it was supposedly going to receive a title change to "Astonishing X-Men: Second Stage". Which also never came to pass. So something must have change somewhere along the line.

Question, Beast and Brand still together?
Yes, but since the latest issues of Astonishing would have been pre-Secret Invasion it's possible that that has since changed.

Did they break up in Secret Invasion or something?

No, but SWORD was struck, and struck hard by the Skrull invasion force. Agent Brand was hit with the brunt of it, so who knows how that could change their relationship from that point onwards.

Warpath has never been in Astonishing, except perhaps in Joss Whedon's Giant-Size finale.

Ace,

I think that image was released before the final issue of Joss Whedon's run came out. So the whole team was there on purpose to prevent spoilers. I think.
