So... I caught Watchmen on Sunday.

Before I weigh in... has anyone else seen it?

Thoughts? Impressions?

Definitely worth seeing. I think I went in with my expectations way to high.

But as I said in another thread, Rorschach was great, fight scenes were awesome and the opening was spectacular.

I'm going on Sunday, hopfully in IMAX!
I know that they altered the ending to fit better for screen time, but heard the rest was pretty accurate to the GN.

Very accurate... still I just found the film strangely flat. The acting (other than Rorschach and maybe the Comedian) is uninspired. Which for Dr. Manhattan is fine, but for the rest limited the energy and excitement of the movie.

Wasn't in the movie. I think a DVD of the Black Freighter is coming out today (Tuesday).

Bummer. The symmetry between the themes in the Black Freighter comic and the real world in the GN were great!

Well, in defense of the movie... they kept a lot of the GN in there... the movie is almost 3 hours long!

Frankly, and I hate to say this, the movie might be too faithful.

I loved the ending, I prefer this ending over the comic book one. Here is my review I posted on Roleplay Adventures:

Quote:

My rating: 9 out of 10 stars.

First Reaction:

This movie was great. The rating is R and it really does show through the entire movie. I really did feel like I was watching a mature super hero movie for adults. One of my major gripes with movies like the X-Men, Spiderman, and Batman is that these movies have a lot of emphasis on teens. A lot of times I felt out of place watching these movies with the same morals over and over again. After awhile these movies lost their originality on me. With Watchman I felt like I was once again a part of something fresh and original. I think if it was any more complicated, I might of not liked it as much. However the movie has the right amount of violence, drama, and action to keep me from losing focus on how awesome the Watchmen are.

It's true the first twenty minutes is about a murder mystery, but as the story opens up over the next two hours, the story delves deeper into this seven layer cake of a master piece. The story carries heavily themes of political war that was seen 60's and 70's. Communism and the Cold war appear often and so does president Richard Nixon. The viewer is exposed to these life long questions of "Is man his own worst enemy?", "Is justice more important then peace?", and "What does it mean to be human?". You can really spend hours analyzing all the different scenes and thought provoking questions this movie has to offer. Sure if you don't have a soft spot for costume heroes or complicated plots, then this might not be your cup of tea. However the comic is not necessary to enjoy this movie, since I haven't read it since I was seventeen. And I hardly remembered what the plot was about.

There are two sex scenes but they are hardly hurtful on the movie. The first scene is comical and awkward since the main character has a hard time "focusing". It can hardly be called a sex scene really. The second which is also the last is a bit raunchy, but it also only last for two minutes. If I felt the need to complain about anything, it would be Manhattan's blue penis which pops up more then a few times in the movie. Thankfully it was hardly noticeable until my friend pointed it out to me. Still I had a hard time not noticing it after it was pointed out. Again this is a really mature film and it's definitely not for kids who are a fan of the Fantastic Four and Iron Man. I honestly don't think they would comprehend half of what is being discussed by characters like Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias.

Anyway that is my first impression of the movie. It's not perfect but it is preferable to most of the super hero movies I've seen. It's dark, it's violent and a little bit preachy. But in the end it succeeded in what it was trying to accomplish.
