Okay so I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm still a dunce when it comes to the enterprise that is X-Men. Apart from seeing the movies, and flicking through a few of the comics as a kid, I've not had much experience with the world.

So, if you're in the same boat, or atleast in the same ocean, then feel free to ask all the questions you think are silly. Or perhaps you have a few links to some websites that have helped you get to terms with the world of Wolverine and his mass of friends, peers and enemies. Oh, and scorned women. You can't forget the women.

The Marvel Database is a good place to start. It's like wikipedia but dedicated to all Marvel comic characters. Always click on the name that is associated with "Earth 616", because that is the main character featured in most books.

For example this is Earth 616 Lady Deathstrike:

And this is Alternate Universe Lady Deathstrike:

I love to answer questions, so feel free to post them here.

I was introduced to Wolverine through the movies, but quickly discovered that there was about 30 years worth of on-going backstory that I didn't have a clue about. Never mind that my kid sister had been reading X-Men in the 80s, I just completely missed out. Of course, I took to the internet to find out more about this intriguing character, and found a number of fan sites, good and bad...the best, of course, being "The Wolverine Files." However, another award-winning site in its day (it has not been updated since 6/1/04) is Wolverine's R.E.A.L.M. managed and established by Alan Quan.

http://wolverine.x-knights.com/slash.html

Besides the usual facts, pix, fiction, etc., the best thing about this site to me is the "Wolverine Issue Database." Quan actually goes issue-by-issue with a shot of the cover, lists the creative team, gives a synopsis, and then reviews and rates each issue starting with Wolverine Vol. 1, no. 1. This has been invaluable to a newbie like me in trying to determine what collected issues I might really want to buy. I can go there and look at the info. I have not seen a feature like this on any other site. Unfortunately, Quan ran out of time or inclination about the time of the second or third issue into the "Enemy of the State" storyline, but I still use his site to check specific issue numbers referenced elsewhere.

Marvel Comics presents was a format that had 2-4 different stories with different creators/characters in them. They are considered cannon but generally told stories that were outside of the normal events that were happening in Marvel at the time. A lot of young or new talent got their start in Marvel Comics presents because you did not have to be the fastest artist or know all the history to make a story that worked.

There were two different Marvel Comics Presents: the first went from 1988-1995 and was 175 issues. Wolverine appeared in many of them. The second attempt was just a couple of years ago and went only 12 issues.

A lot of those appearances have been collected though as far as Wolverine is concerned so you can mostly buy the collections and not miss out on too much:

Marvel Comics Presents: Wolverine Vol. 1 Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #1-10 ISBN 978-0785118268
Marvel Comics Presents: Wolverine Vol. 2 Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #39-50 ISBN 978-0785118831
Marvel Comics Presents: Wolverine Vol. 3 Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #51-61 ISBN 978-0785120650
Marvel Comics Presents: Wolverine Vol. 4 Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #62-71 ISBN 978-0785120667
Wolverine: Weapon X Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #72-84 ISBN 978-0785137269
Wolverine: Blood Hungry Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #85-92 ISBN 978-0785100034
Wolverine: Typhoid's Kiss Marvel Comics Presents Vol. 1 #109-116 ISBN 978-0785100560

No problem. There are some stories that you don't get with this but most of the big ones have been reprinted.
