I am putting this thought here because it involves Daniel Way and he writes Wolverine: Origins. i was just reading DIG's updates and read the comment that Wolverine has been molded and manipulated throughout his life to become what he is today. I agree with this statement completely, and have often tried to understand the characterization of Wolverine and why he does what he does. My thought is this, Logan is like John Rambo (I hate just calling him Rambo) from the 1st "First Blood" movie. Like John Rambo Logan was trained, molded, and manipulated to kill...period. Logan when in attack mode has his berserker rages, and John Rambo in a similar fashion becomes very narrow of focus and driven when he is in a fight. If i may take a slight leap of logic here I would also say that John Rambo and Logan are also quite unhappy or uncomfortable being what they are. I think that both, given the opportunity would rather be anything other than what they have become. The two characters do not really enjoy the carnage that they inflict in the way that Sabertooth and Deadpool do or did The two men are also deeply scarred by what they have scene, experienced and been forced to do that makes them sympahetic characters in my opnion. As an end note I hope that I have not offended anyone by comparing our beloved Wolvie to John Rambo? I love the 1st "First Blood" movie , and believe if you ignore all the cliches involved John Rambo is a valid character. Also I have not read David Morrell's First Blood novel yet but I really want to. |

You make a good point, but i dunno..I always thought there was more heart and diversity in Wolvie than in Rambo. Then again, they way they tend to write Wolvie sometimes........ |

Well, he could very well be both. A truly diverse character has multiple and varied facets to his personality. When you see Wolverine portrayed in such a way, yes, that's a facet of his personality. But there's more to him than simply being a manipulated weapon. And when you see him in a more heroic role, there's more to him than that as well. We as fans like to discuss how much darker the character has been written in recent years. We sometimes feel that overshadows the rest. But one can never forget how much good the character has done as well. Yes, he may have tortured a young Nuke while under the influence of mind control, but in his lifetime he's also saved millions, possibly billions of innocent lives. Even throughout his darker periods he found ways to shine a little bit of light. |
