Self claimed fanfic critic.
I never recall having toys, kept playing video games like a true nerd.
Missed D&D that way though.....

Better then what we used to shoot at each other. BB guns and roman candles are not exactly safe. Fun though.
Remember the 1970s kid invented backyard game? "Hey I am going to throw this metal tipped lawn dart way high in the air and you try and catch it."

When I was a kid ( eons ago) my brother got one of those chemistry sets for Christmas. The ones they have now are nothing like back then. I think we could have made a bomb with it if we really tried.
Some of those chemistry sets had actual dangerous chemicals in them. There was even one called the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab (1950-1951) that actually came with radioactive material.

Most of our play times ended with someone bleeding. It was just expected. We ran around in the woods with real weapons. Hell I had things from the Army Surplus store in my pockets. Of course those were the days when the parents just kicked you out the door in the morning and told you to come back for lunch or maybe dinner.
or by time the streetlights came on. Of course when we lived in a small town my mom knew most of our neighbors, so I was out causing trouble word usually got back to her long before I got home. When I was like nine or ten me and my friends thought our parents where psychic because they pretty much knew all the stupid crap that we did almost as fast as we thought it up.

When I was like eight or nine years old my friends and I discovered Robin Hood, so one summer a bunch of the parents bought us bow and arrow sets. With real fricking arrows!!!

By the time I was ten an uncle gave me a rambo-style combat knife with the camoflage sheath, big black 7 inch blade, compass in the hilt, matches, wire garrott, and the whole nine yards. I was never a hunter and recieved no instruction about what to use the damn thing for, but it was like "here you go kid, have fun." So I promptly sat down and sharpened the damn thing until it had a razor sharp edge, and my parents never said a word. For like a year running around playing with my friends I carried that knife with me.

Now these days if you saw a ten-year old kid running around with this giant ass knife the cops and child protective services would lose their minds.
